Editorial Review

Palm's simple yet elegant operating system has long been a shining light in the world of PDAs. The good news on the Palm m505 is that the Palm OS still offers a wide array of tools to gather yourpersonal and business data in a great computing environment. Unfortunately, the most touted aspectof the Palm m505--its color screen--is a disappointment.

Turning it on for the first time, we wondered if we had received the monochrome version Palm m500handheld--the screen was dark and barely visible in our moderately lit office. We fumbledaround for the contrast preference, but couldn't find it. In fact, the Palm m505 has no way toadjust contrast other than to turn on the backlight. Only with the backlight activated could weactually discern the icon and screen colors, and even then the LCD screen seemed muted.

On side-by-side tests with the Handspring Visor Prism, its main color competition, the Palm m505was lacking in brightness and crispness--despite both handhelds' having 16-bit displaysupport that can show up to 65,000 colors.

The reason for this seems to be that Palm hassacrificed brilliance for energy efficiency. The Palm m505's rechargeable battery does, indeed, keep its charge with "normal" usage (estimatedby Palm at 40 minutes per day) for about three weeks. However, with the mandatory useof the m505's backlight, we found the battery needed more frequent charging. Luckily, charge timein the included HotSync cradle/recharger is quite short.

The basic Palm applications in OS version 4.0--Address, Date Book, Memo Pad, and To DoList--remain largely unchanged, with a few tweaks here and there. For instance, the Date Book applicationnow includes a screen view with a list of the appointments and to-do items for a particular date. And like the m100 series, the Note Pad has been added for doodling and scribbling handwrittennotes (instead of writing longer tomes in the Memo Pad using the Palm's Graffiti alphabet).

Palm has collected a number of bonus software titles that you can easily add to the m505 withoutdenting much of the 8 MB of memory, including AvantGo, which downloads Web news and content from avariety of sources (enabling us to keep up with Aussie Rules Football scores). The biggest testfor the color screen came with PhotoSuite, an image viewing app that displays a range of image-file formats downloaded from your PC. We found the color depth to be quite good, but the screen'slack of brightness made the images look rather muddy.

Additionally, several connectivity applications from Palm's Mobile Internet Kit are provided, including the Web Clipping app for viewing Web content built specifically for Palm viewing andMultiMail SE for accessing e-mail. And, of course, there's the highly touted expansion slot forSecureDigital cards and MultiMediaCards, allowing you to add memory, content, and functionality.Unfortunately, at the time of this review, we were unable to test any of the cards offered byPalm.

With its curved angles, thin design, and light weight, the Palm m505 closely resembles itspredecessor, the Palm V series handheld. And like that model, the m505 feels very comfortable bothin the palm of your hand and resting in your pocket. Also, with the Palm m505's new 33 MHzDragonball VZ processor, switching applications seemed much more immediate.

The siren song of the new m500 series is indeed seductive, and Palm has done well to streamlineits basic repertoire and add some tasty new notes to the mix. However, the Palm m505 is ultimatelya disappointment due to its underwhelming color display. If you're having trouble getting thissong out of your head, the Palm m500 handheld (with all the functions of the Palm m505 but with a monochromescreen) should keep your toes tapping just fine. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

Pros:

  • Faster processor
  • Classic Palm styling--contoured design is comfortable to hold
  • Good range of additional software, from Internet connectivity to e-book reader
  • New expansion slot takes industry standard SecureDigital cards and MultiMediaCards

Cons:

  • Color screen is rather dim and ultimately disappointing
  • Backlighting must be turned on to see the color screen, wearing down the rechargeablebattery
  • Expandability via SecureDigital and MMC cards limited by current offerings

Features

  • Built-in 8 MB memory stores thousands of contacts, appointments, to-do items, and notes
  • Displays over 65,000 colors--view photos, video clips, and more

4-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Palm, 2.75 Years w/m505
I've owned this since late 2001. It replaced a 4-year-old Palm Pilot Professional (1MB mono, AAA batts). It has been very solid for me. I am hooked on the simplicity of the Palm OS. I don't need a notebook computer in my pocket. I need an all-in-one-place-and-go-anywhere life organizer--calendar, address book, Scrabble (extra!), with ability to sync to desktop @ home and @ work; beam entries between this and my wife's m130. I also have add-on of SplashID for password-protected storage of PINs, passwords, web-logins, and other sensitive/private info. As a result, every piece of critical info (13+ categories of addresses, work/personal appointments, etc.) is always at my fingertips, and always safely backed-up on the Palm Desktop.

Battery life has been fine for my usage levels. Backlight is dimmer than newer models, but it does the job (I'm not playing DVD movies, for cryin' out loud).

Only problem I'm currently having is that a small section of the screen (approximately a .5"x.5" square) has "died" within the past 6 months--losing all touch sensitivity....so I have to work around that.

My office IT guy says PalmOne will come out with next generation of models this fall, so I'll wait for that selection before replacing this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for almost anybody!
The Palm M505 is a neat little PDA. It's features are perfect for students to business people. There are many positive elements to this little Palm.

The Palm M505 is the perfect companion for a student. It's small size and low price makes it perfect for somebody on the run and someone in need of a durable, compact Palm Pilot. In it's life, my Palm has been dropped numerous times, gotten soaked in water, and gotten thrown into the bottom of a backpack countless times. Again, it is perfect for anyone in need of durable database.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME CHRISTMAS PRESENT!!
I got this awesome palm piolot with a keyboard and it is great!I bought games and put a cool "Documents to Go" program on it.I write stories a lot so I can use it for that, and I can also write school things on it if I'm in the car and my handwriting won't be sloppy! This is very cool.I am 12 1/2 and this is one of the best palms I have ever used. You should buy it! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this PC
As of October 23, 2001, this machine is listed @ (dollar amount) but it only comes with 16MB of VRAM, SDRAM (the wildly inexpensive and currently mid-tech sort), what looks to be on-board sound, and only a 17' monitor: this is an overpriced, underperforming PC.While the P4 cpus have high clocks, my 1.5 ghz rdram equipped p4 at work performs about as well as my p3 1ghz at proc intensive tasks like compiling and batch processes.AMD far surpasses most intel procs in most benchmarks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful.
This computer is perfect for my kids. They use it for anything. This is one of the best computer we have bought.I don't think we will go back to HP or Apple.Compaq has really put some thought into this machine. The ram is perfect and the prcesser is fast enough to run any game I have. The screen is a perfect size not to big not to small, The only draw back is you don't get web cam.But this is really a five star computer.....

Creative Labs Silver Nomad Jukebox "C" (MP3/WMA)
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $219.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

One of our biggest frustrations with MP3 players has been their limited storage capacity. You'll typically get 64 MB via internal memory or memory cards, which provides just a little over an hour of near CD-quality MP3 audio. So when we heard that Creative was releasing a 6 GB player that can hold over 100 hours of music, it sounded perfect. Soon, we'd be rifling through a massive catalog of tunes on our little player, from Elvis Costello to LL Cool J to Miles Davis, whenever the whim struck.

The Nomad Jukebox is essentially a portable hard drive with software that will play MP3 audio. Since hard drives include spinning and moving parts, this player is not ideal for active MP3 users such as joggers and snowboarders.

We cracked open the box, inserted the rechargeable batteries, plugged in the AC adapter, and waited the recommended 12 hours for them to charge initially. This is a very important step. This was our second set of batteries--we didn't bother to heed Creative's initial charging directions when we first got the product, and our first set of batteries soon lost the capacity to be recharged.

After installing the included software (we tested the Jukebox on a Macintosh G4 using SoundJam MP; for PCs, Creative includes PlayCenter 2) and connecting the USB cable, we quickly deleted 2 GB of starter MP3 and audiobook files and started loading our own music. We started with about 500 songs, but noticed after the load had finished that not all the songs made it onto the Jukebox. Also, the SoundJam software didn't like us doing any other work on our Mac G4, stalling out the load whenever we switched to another program.

We found it was best to load in smaller numbers and to keep SoundJam up as the active application (unfortunately, not the most efficient use of computer time). The transfer rate is roughly six minutes per 100 MB, which translates to about 25 songs. (So far, we've loaded 861 songs and we still have 2.3 GB of storage left.)

Once music has been transferred to the Jukebox, you need to create an active playing list by navigating one of three lists--artists, albums, and genres--then adding songs to the queue. (This points out the need for creating thorough ID3 tags, an electronic label that can include song title, track number, year, and more. ID3 tags can be created via the PlayCenter and SoundJam software manually, or they can be imported from the online CDDB database. For more information about tagging, see the Amazon.com Making MP3s Guide.) Playlists can be saved in the Jukebox, though it can be a bit tedious (there's no keyboard), and you can't add songs to an existing playlist.

The Jukebox also sports some nice additions. It has a line-in recording capability (using an external microphone), which records WAV files that can be adjusted for optimal (or low-end) sound quality, and it can play audiobooks.

The biggest downside to the Nomad Jukebox is its portability. As noted, it does run on rechargeable batteries, but they'll last far less than the advertised two hours. Also, this isn't the device to take jogging; its internal hard drive, though somewhat resistant to shock and motion, just won't take that kind of activity. It's really made for stationary play using its included AC adapter.

It also has a few playback glitches, the biggest being that you can't fast- forward or rewind within a song. Also, there's no bookmark feature for audiobook listening--a necessity for long files.

Ultimately, the Creative Nomad Jukebox isn't perfect and isn't suited for everyone's MP3 needs. But it has become a staple of our gadget life--it travels with us daily to the office and hooks in nicely into stereo systems, both at home and at friends' houses. Someday, we'll all wonder what we did without an MP3 jukebox. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

Pros:

  • 6 GB of storage is massive--over 1,000 songs
  • Several methods for selecting playlist songs (artist, album, and genre)
  • Line-out for connecting to stereo systems, and line-in for recording
Cons:
  • Battery power is sucked up quickly
  • Prone to skipping/stalling when used in heavy activity

1-0 out of 5 stars Good product, USELESS support
I bought the product a few months ago & enjoyed its use - great sound & functionality (I'd have given 4 stars). Unfortunately, a friend sent it crashing to the floor & it stopped working completely. I have, since then, tried every available method for getting in touch with Creative's tech support department - multiple emails (all unanswered) & phone calls (on hold for ++45 minutes EVERY TIME with never an answer regardless of the time of day). The sales department is the only one who picks up the phone & won't give any further information about support or repair. I'd like to send the unit to them to have it repaired (I'm assuming the hard drive needs replacement)and would gladly pay any costs, including shipping, which I have explained multiple times to the sales rep answering the phone. No answers...Unfortunately, I am at the end of my rope & decided it's a sunk cost. LESSON LEARNED: DON'T BUY FROM A ONE PRODUCT COMPANY!! Going back to my good old Rio 500 (purchased 2 years ago & still working beautifully). It doesn't have the memory, but it's less frustrating - they actualy answer the phone & offer advice!

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Technical Support
I purchased my first Nomad for my wife 12/2000.We had problems with the battery charger, but because of some personal issues, didn't return within 90 days. When I contacted technical support, they said they had worked out the problems with the batteries, but that because I was out of warrenty, I would be better off buying a new one as they would charge me ... to repair, even if it was something simple.

Because I liked the concept of the Nomad I purchased another. The batteries did work a little better this time, for a while, but now (again past the 90 days) I am getting very little battery life again.I assume I am stuck with a unit that only plays plugged in.

I bought it for my wife to walk with........Oh, well. ... Read more

Sony MVCFD75 Mavica 0.3MP Digital Camera

Editorial Review

The Sony Mavica MVC-FD75 is an easy-to-use digital camera that offers a 10x optical zoom lens not normally found on an entry-level model. The nearly universal floppy is the storage medium of choice. The 640 x 480 resolution is great for e-mailing, posting on the Web, or making small prints (no larger than 3-by-4 inches).

There are a number of programmed exposure modes that help you take pictures in just about any circumstance, and an auto white balance makes sure your colors remain true. For macro lovers, there's an integrated auto macro mode, which lets you take pictures up close. Images are captured in the JPEG format by default, but you can also record uncompressed bitmaps. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still using my Mavica, 2nd review
I originally reviewed this camera March '01 and just found my review on a web search. I gave it a "5" and still do - easy to use and great price. The floppies save you from crawling around hooking stuff behind the computer- always a nightmare in MY office! For online selling the pics are great, closeups are the only letdown and if you are very careful you can do "ok" but not great.Still a big bang for the buck and it's been A+++ for function, not a problem ever and I'm a heavy user. A solid buy, you could do much worse!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mavica MVC-FD75
I'm no techie and like things simple, straightforward and easy to use. This camera fits the bill.I limit digital photography to web usage, sending pics via email, looking at pics on my computer or TV via DVD player, posting pics on eBay and hobby websites, etc. and this camera is perfect for those purposes. The use of floppy discs is particularly nice and so is the outstanding macro/close-up capability. If you plan to blow up pics fairly large and print them, a higher resolution camera may be preferable, but for 95% of my needs this camera is perfect and so much easier to use than my wife's fancy, expensive, high resolution camera with more of bells and whistles.

3-0 out of 5 stars c stalcup
The camera is very convenient but if the light is not bright enough the image does not show on the screen, so pictures are hard to take centered or in focus. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okfor the money
... it has a RF in, which is just a Barrel Jack for your cable input. NO audio or Video inputs such as Component, SVHS or Composit ... .now on to the features, one thing i can state is that this tv has TONS of features, smart sound, smart picture, bass adjust, tone adjust. one flaw is that the smart picture doesnt really do much justice for this tv since you only have the RF INPUT picture quality is kind of poor just imagine an OVER sharpened picture and thats pretty much what you get. Just wish they would have added composite (RCA JACKS) Inputs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best on the Market
After owning 2 RCA's in 4 years, in which the picture tube went out just past the warranty, I switched to Philips Magnavox.I have enjoyed it for 5years now.The picture is the best I've ever seen in color TV, and thesmart sound is a feature I really enjoy.I am sold on Philips Magnavox, and my next TV, whenever I buy a new one, will be a Philips Magnavox.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sound confusion
Be aware that even though this TV has a pair of speakers it is NOT a stereo TV. The comparable stereo model is model number 25TS56C 25". I ordered this TV tonite thinking it was stereo, but then found out differentby comparing prices and models from another site. So since I haven'treceived the TV yet Igive it a 3 star rating. I just wanted others to notmake the same mistake I did! I will hook this TV up thru a stereo VCR andan audio receiver so I can still experience stereo sound if I want.Stillthis a good deal with the free shipping and no taxes! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars incredible!
although my rating for this product was only three stars, i was overwhelmed by the design of this product, it was just so captivating in sight and everything about this "dream" refrigerator is just simple remarkable and high tech, so ladies and gentlemen, my final last words for this is... INCREDIBLE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Little White Fridge that Gos
Not a bad refrig.Overall not a bad product, just a little pricy for this product.I would recommend it for the size and convenience.

4-0 out of 5 stars It works
Not much to say about this unit... The temperature inside can get VERY cold if you want, or just cool if you want, either way it does the job you asked for. The freezer also works well, makes ice in a flash on the medium temp setting.

Inside, its perfect for holding sodas or beer or what not and holds more than you would think. This unit is not the best for bottled beers though, you have to take out the only rack inside which holds the drip tray.

All in all, this is a great compact refrigerator. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Working for over 2 years
I have had this unit for over 2 years and everything still works just as good as the day I bought it.I use it as my only stove almost daily as I live in a basement apartment. The only problem I have with it is that it takes a while to heat to the point of boiling but once there it stays hot.

1-0 out of 5 stars Large Burner Failed
Large burner failed after about 12 months use.I opened it up the wire between the plug and the resistor had burned. Not only is it broken, it is a fire hazard.I lost all the paperwork that came with it and I probably voided the warranty by opening it.I think I can fix it but I am not going to risk a fire, so I will try another brand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
But by the looks of the other reviews here, I guess I did better than most. It took mine 11 months to break. Worked great (slow to heat up, but that's okay), until yesterday when it started to smell and then smoke came pouring out. After reading other comments I can see it's not worth trying to get it fixed. Now I'll need to buy another hotplate, but it definitely won't be a Toastmaster. I will never buy a Toastmaster product again. For the $40 I paid, it should have lasted a lot longer than 11 months. Don't waste your money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It's a hot one!
Instructions clearly say to use no higher than 40 watt lightbulbs. However, this lamp gets very, very hot when using only 40 watts.Plus, you don't get much light from a 40 watt lightbulb!I do not recommend this products for a child's room. Our 4 year old tried to adjust the light for his activity and burned his little fingers.Lamp is now is the garage.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK
This lamp did smell like burning plastic all the time even with the proper light bulb watt. The lamp only lasted approx. 6 mths. (occassional use) before constantly burning out all of the lightbulbs instantly. Not a terrific buy for the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Looking but Dangerous
One of the new light bulbs that we put in actually overheated and exploded after a few uses. This item should be recalled. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars bad bearings
I have had 5 of these fans and every one burned out the main fan bearing. There must be a fatal design flaw. Chuck Hird

1-0 out of 5 stars Fans just not worth much!
This fan is not worth much.I guess that is why they are so cheep. My job purchased 22 fans and more than 50% are not working after 9 months after purchased!I do plan to use the 3yr warranty for this product!I agree, we get what we pay for, however the problems associated with this product such as insuficiant hardware or missing hardware to put this together and 3 of these fans burning out shortly after use and the rest later during 9 months, should not be happening! The manufacture must take a good long look at their product before putting out to general public if they want a good review!

2-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy windmere fans!!!!
When i got this fan and was putting it togther i was noticing that all of the parts were plastic and that the fan was cheeply made. When i turned the fan on i was very dissapointed because it did not move hardley any air, I thought that it might be becaust of how small it is. But i have a 12in table fan (that is the same size) and it moves twice as much air. I have another windmere fan and it doesnt move hardley any air either. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars awful!
i bought this 2 years ago for $50 and it has never kept the handles on, even w/super glue.it was a pain to put together and the drawers only fit in certain spots, and i was meticulous to put it all together square.i always scratch myself on the edges of the drawers.i'm moving now and even though i'm broke i'm excited to get rid of these, even if we have to use milk crates.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money if you put it together correctly
I really liked this little drawer set. I bought it over THREE years ago and it still looks like NEW! I used it to put my daughter's clothes in since we had a small apartment and couldn't fit anything bigger in her room. My daughter has climbed on it numerous times and the handles NEVER broke, she colored on it a few times and it was relatively easy for me to get the crayon and marker stains off, AND the drawers slide out easily! The only reason I give it four stars is because it tookme over an hour to assemble. But I took my time so that I could do it correctly. After reading the other feedback, I realize that's probably why my drawer set is still in good condition. But for the price, I feel it's worth it. And best of all, it matches almost any room decor!

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!!!!!
This drawer system is a waste of $30. I threw mine in the trash after one week of use. The top drawer front kept falling off and the middle drawer wouldn't stay on it's runner. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost
I almost purchased this product, but discovered that it does not have "play exchange."This feature allows you to change discs while one is playing.Instead I bought the Sharp XLHP500, which I am very happy with.

5-0 out of 5 stars And the cat likes the empty box, too
I realized I was in the market for a new CD player when the old boombox wouldn't play home-burned MP3 disks.

In the [local store], my wife thought the PANASONIC SC-PM11 "cute". I was more impressed by the price - [money amount]less than list price elsewhere. And we both thought the sound quality excellent.

Once home with our new toy, we suspected we'd made the right choice when the cat woke up and came over to watch as we unpacked the box. Usually, she ignores our homecoming.

Outside its carton, everything about the SC-PM11 is compact - the main unit, speakers, and remote control. Small enough to take into the doghouse if the spouse banishes you there. For us, the main unit fits nicely on a shelf of the living room entertainment center, with the speakers on the top. The system's silver and grey exterior and the orange background of the LCD display don't match the center's dark walnut finish, but what would? The remote joins a growing pile (TV, cable box, VHS player, DVD player). At first, I wondered about the usefulness of a remote, but this particular system has radio and CD listening features only accessible through the hand-held device: pre-setting of radio stations and their subsequent recall, selecting repeat and random play modes for CDs, creating custom programs of CD tracks. I'd better not lose the remote in the couch cushions.

But what about the sound? Those little speakers are amazing. Just to see how high they'd go, we cranked up our favorite CD of the moment, the CHICAGO soundtrack, to the point where Catherine Zeta-Jones's rendition of "All That Jazz" had the windows vibrating. We chickened out and turned it down before the neighbors called the police, but it's nice to know we can be a public nuisance if we so choose.

There are built-in sound quality/field settings that can be chosen: Heavy (for music needing an "added punch"), Clear (for treble range clarity), Soft (for elevator music), Disco (for lengthy reverberations), Live (for "more alive" vocals), and Hall (for concert hall expansiveness). And, to enhance the bass and treble effects, there's the SUPER SOUND EQ button. Audio snobs will perhaps scoff at these one-button gimmicks, but my needs are less discriminating and they'll do fine.

Finally, the Operating Instructions are impressively lucid. The multitudinous features are illustrated, numbered and page referenced, and there's a nice mix of bold-face, boxed and highlighted type to call attention to the important stuff.

And the cat? She jumped into the box once we got it emptied and looked eminently pleased with her new snoozing spot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great system for the price
After spending so little on the system, I thought I'd be disappointed, but the flaws are few and minor, and overall this is an excellent system.

The most important thing that I discovered about the system when it arrived was that it does indeed have an auxilary input -- the specs either say that it doesn't or are not clear about that. The Aux-In is important if you plan on hooking up your DVD player, Playstation, or MP3 player. I bought thinking that it wouldn't have one but was pleasantly surprised to find that it did.

Otherwise the SC-PM11 is a very powerful stereo in a small amount of space. The 5 CD changer works well, and allows random play from one or all five discs. Buttons allow one-touch playing of any of the 5 CDs, and the sound is very good. The radio has good reception, and comes with an external antenna for improved reception. Graphic equalizer is of the pre-set variety, but at least one of the settings should be good for whatever kind of music you are playing. Tape player is fine, and supposedly allows timed-recordings of programs, which is a nice feature.

Minor problems include the time it takes to switch between CDs, which can be as much as 20 seconds before it starts the next song, and the noise of the changer which is quite noticable. Some of the functions are only available from the remote, which I consider a mistake in case anyone loses the remote, and the buttons on both the remote and the unit itself are not very well laid out. The CD player seems overly sensitive to scratched CDs. All of these are minor inconveniences though, and the fact that it's a very powerful yet compact 5 CD system at a low price make this a wise purchase. ... Read more
