    Editorial Review

Apple's all-in-one eMac, originally designed for the education market, is now available to everyone. The most affordable G4-based computer series ever, the eMac now includes Apple's SuperDrive, which allows you to burn both recordable DVDs and CDs, along with a suite of Apple software that will allow your digital creativity to flow from the moment you plug in the computer.

The new SuperDrive-equipped eMac model is the industry's lowest-cost way to author and burn custom DVDs that play in most consumer DVD players. Apple's award-winning iMovie and iDVD applications come pre-installed on the new eMac, enabling users to edit their video and create and burn their own custom DVDs without buying additional software.

The popular eMac features a stunning 17-inch flat CRT display in a remarkably compact design. Its shape lets you conserve desk space--the entire computer is smaller than most 17-inch displays, yet it includes not only the display, but also an integrated high-performance stereo audio system with a 16-watt digital amplifier, as well as the SuperDrive. In fact, it's actually less deep (by about 8 mm) than the original groundbreaking 15-inch iMac. It also features 256 MB of system memory, a 60 GB hard drive, and an nVidia GeForce2 MX graphics processor for stunning graphics display.

The eMac's 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processor uses Velocity Engine technology, which makes multimedia tasks like CD burning and digital video editing faster and easier. In addition, it includes Apple's industry-leading suite of digital lifestyle applications. That includes iPhoto for managing and sharing digital photographs, iMovie for creating digital movies, and iTunes for creating a digital music library, as well as iDVD. With five USB ports and two high-speed FireWire ports, the eMac offers easy plug-and-play connections to popular peripherals such as digital video camcorders, digital still cameras, printers, and scanners.

A built-in 56K modem means you won't need any additional hardware to connect to the Internet. In addition, the eMac comes with a built-in Ethernet connection, which allows it to join your home, office, or school network. An AirPort slot makes it easy to connect the eMac to a wireless network with the addition of an AirPort card. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superior to Windows
To start off: if you are thinking about making "the switch", go for it! The eMac is perfect for people who want the power of the G4 processor for less money than an iMac.

I've always been a supporter of the Mac, but haven't used them most of my life. At my house, my parents use Wintel boxes with Windows XP Pro installed. While this is M$'s best operating system yet, it doesn't come anywhere close to Mac OSX. If you use Windows, you know that it crashes way too often. Mac OSX will never crash on you, mainly because its based on Unix. So all you Unix, Linux and Windows users, your search for rock solid stability is o.v.e.r.

The eMac comes with a treasure trove of software preinstalled on it. Applications like iTunes, iMovie, iDVD (if you get the Superdrive version of eMac) and iPhoto are perfect for managing your digital lifestyle. I use iTunes all the time to easily create and burn CD's for everyone in my family!

But music and movies isn't all the Mac is good for, at my school I am the layout editor for our newspaper. Windows just didn't cut it for creating the paper, but this Mac is godsend. While I am currently looking into buying M$ Office X, I use Appleworks to create everything. Appleworks seemlessly can open Word documents. In fact, Macs coexist and speak to Windows boxes better than most Windows do themselves!

The eMac was originally created for schools and education. In part, the same goes for me. Being a student, I find the eMac can easily do any task. It includes the World Book Encyclopedia (an excellent refernce and info source) installed on it. Running many programs at the same time is a breeze. One thing I would suggest is that you purchase some extra RAM for this computer. 256k is kinda low, I would recommend 512 MB's.

While some people may shun Apple's good looks and slick designs, don't be fooled, they aren't all fluff and no substance. The built in sound system is excellent, light years ahead of Wintel built in "sound systems". The graphics are very sharp, pretty good for games.

    Bottom line:

This computer is great for everyone, now stop reading and go buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Apple does it Again...
All mac fans know that the iMac was a great success. The new eMac doesn't fall short of the iMac reputation. This computer is perfectly designed for schools, has a lot of power, and is overall a great computer. I would say that even people who don't happen to own a school could use this computer as a great resource. If you are looking for a Mac, I would recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Just Wanted a Computer that Actually Works
Hubba Hubba.I got home, took out the Mac, and within an hour, I'd already set it up, connected to the internet, surfed the web, and burned a music CD mix.The ads don't lie.

A year ago, I gave in to pressure from friends/PC owners who told me I could get a faster, cheaper computer which ran all my software from work.It was definitely cheaper, but after a year of poor performance, regular system crashes, and difficulty performing the most basic tasks (like burning a CD or installing software), I moved back to Mac.

I'd never tell anyone not to get a PC, but I would recommend this Mac if it's important to you to own a reasonably-priced, all-in-one setup that burns CDs and DVDs, has tons of style, and works well on a regular basis.

p.s.I'm not really a 1 year old.well, maybe in terms of maturity... ... Read more

Canon PowerShot G34MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars

    Editorial Review

Few digital camera lines have been as successfully branded as Canon's Powershot. And the best known in that line was the powerful and fun to use G2. Now, Canon's following it up with their G3, which has the same four megapixels of resolution but now offers an improved 4X optical zoom and other updated features.

With a revamped body, the G3 feels a bit more comfortable in the hands. A mid-sized camera, you'll notice it hanging around your neck, but its 14.5 ounce frame won't weigh you down terribly. With a high-speed CompactFlash card, the G3 can take video clips of up to three minutes complete with sound.

You'll want to consider an upgrade to one of those cards, as the G3 ships with only a 32 MB standard CF card--not bad for bundled memory, but you'll be happier with more storage room. Images taken at the highest resolution quickly filled up the 32 MB card, but were highly detailed as well as bright with realistic colors.

The G3 features the same large, bright 1.8-inch LCD as its predecessor, making it easy to frame your shot in anything except direct sunlight. Like earlier G models, the LCD flips out and can be rotated around completely, letting you view it from any angle.

This works well with the G3's two options for self-timing, 2 and 10 seconds, so you can see what you're doing from the target viewpoint. And the G3's above-industry-standard 4x optical zoom lets you get in closer than the G2's 3x zoom as well.

Compatible with Canon's Direct Print feature, you can output images from the G3 directly to any of Canon's Direct Print line of printers. The G3 is a great choice for a 4 megapixel, 4x optical zoom camera with a wealth of features. --J. Curtis

2-0 out of 5 stars Malfunctions, poor cust. service, insulting Upgrade Program
Initially a nice camera. However, while I was stationed in Iraq the camera suffered from an E24 error while it was with my wife in Germany. I chose not to take the camera to Iraq out of fear that it would be damaged. Instead, to my suprise, it was damaged in Germany for no apparant reason, atleast not one due to poor handling. My wife mailed the camera to the Canon repair shop in the States. They returned the camera in working order. The repairs were completed free of charge since it was in the time period of the one year warranty. On the day I returend from Iraq (6 months later after the first repair) a friend took a photo of us at the reception ceremony. The camera relapsed into the same state as before - an E24 error. The LCD screen would not display any data. The camera therefore completely shut itself off, a feature that was later explained to me by a Canon representative that is used to protect the camera from further damage. I spoke with a repair representative about what appears to me to be an easy fix. I was told that since my warranty had expired I would have to pay a minimum of $187 to a maximum of $500 for the repairs. Keep in mind this was told to me prior to any Canon technician ever even looked at the camera. I asked if that would still be the charge if it was a fix as simple as a loose screw and they told me that was an accurate assumption. I then asked if I would be required to pay if it was found that the problem was related to the initial repair having not been done properly while under warranty, again they responded that I would. They then informed me of an "Upgrade Program". They told me I could send them my G3, and pay them an additional $300, and in return I would receive a REFURBISHED G5! Not a new one, REFURBISHED! If I were to accept that offer I would end up paying $950 for a refurbished Canon G5 ($300 + the original $650 for the G3). I was insulted to say the least. I'm willing to bet that those refurbished G5's are part of a program that they have for an upgrade to the G6 for the G5 users that have the same issue as I. What a scam! What a pathetic customer service department! What an insult to an American soldier that just returned from a 13 month deployment in Iraq! Oh yeah, the company is Japanese, they don't care anyway;)

But by the way, I do own another Canon Powershot A20, 2.1 MP. I've owned it for over 3 years and it has been a great camera. I believe Canon is the best brand out there. But as for their repair assistance, customer service, and warranty policy - they are simply an insult!

    An unhappy American soldier...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great camera!
I bought my G3 in September of 2003 after my SLR took a dump 3 weeks before my baby was due.I have NEVER been disappointed.Granted, if I had the money, I would have gone for something better, but this was the BEST I could have gotten for my money. Some reviewers have commented on the camera not being worth the price - you must not have shopped around!I found mine, brand new, for $460 from a reputable online camera store.

My pictures turn out great most of the time.I agree with the slow focus time, but you can't get everything with a prosumer camera.I love the neverending list of options this camera offers (from flash output to f-stops to white balance, etc. etc.).

When I have the money saved up I'll be buying the Canon digital rebel, but until then I am very satisfied with my G3.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, with definite limitations.
I've had my G3 for about 10 months now, and I've taken thousands of pictures with it.The positives:
    - Takes great, clear pictures under ideal conditions; often with better results than my 35mm Canon SLR!
    - Easy uploads to my PC.
    - Accepts my external Canon flash.
    - Excellent battery life.(I've people complain about battery life with other digital cameras, but this really is a strong point for the G3.)
    - The unique LCD that flips over is "cool" (and easy to protect from scratches).

    - Has lots of shooting modes for a non-pro camera.
    The negatives:
    - The lens cap is a poor design; it falls off very easily (at least Canon provides a cord so it doesn't get lost).
    - Focus is slow except under ideal lighting conditions.
    - Focus is unreliable; I've learned to take 3 shots at a time, hoping that at least one of them will be in sharp focus.
    - Photo quality gets noticeably worse (more "noise") as soon as you increase the exposure "speed" above the slowest setting (ASA 50).
    - The design is relatively bulky and heavy for a non-SLR camera, and the controls are not ergonomically correct.
    - The RAW picture format option is useless with this camera because Canon's software gives you virtually no useful options for correcting/modifying photos in RAW format. To do anything useful you have to take the time to convert your photos to JPG anyway.I gave up on RAW after the first couple of tries and have stuck with JPG format since then.
In summary... I expected a lot at this price level, and the G3 really is a great camera for family snapshots, scenery and documents. However, it is a poor camera for low-light conditions or action photography. ... Read more

Canon PowerShot S200 2MP Digital ELPH Camera w/2x Optical Zoom
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $379.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Inch for inch and ounce for ounce, Canon's PowerShot S200 Digital Elphpacks more power into less space than virtually any other digital camera, stuffing a feature-packed, 2-megapixel camera with 2x optical zoom into adiminutive brushed-metal case that slips easily into a purse or pocket.

    Resolution
Like last year's S110, the S200 features a 2-megapixel sensor for sharp printsat sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. With cameras of up to 5 megapixels now on themarket, some enthusiasts were hoping the Elph would makethe jump to 3 megapixels, but it appears that Canon still believes 2 megapixelsremains the best balance between performance and price for most consumers. Wetend to agree. If you regularly print your photos at sizes larger than 8 by 10inches, you'll probably want a camera with higher resolution and more manual controls than the Elphoffers--we recommend Canon's 3-megapixel S30 or 4-megapixel S40.

    Optics
A 2x optical zoom lens (35-70mm equivalent) aids in photo composition, and anadditional 2.5x digital zoom (5x total) further magnifies your image. Remember, however, that digital zoom reduces the sharpness and detail of your image, soit's best used sparingly. Two systems help ensure your pictures will beperfectly focused, even in challenging conditions: a multizone autofocus workseven when the subject of your photo isn't in the center of the scene, and inlow-light situations (a particular weakness of many digital cameras), afocus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accuratelydetermine distance. If you're hoping for a more powerful zoom, the S330 Elph hasa 3x zoom and slightly larger dimensions but is otherwise nearly identical.

    More Features
Though it's primarily designed as a point-and-shoot, the S200 includes severaladvanced features for photographers who want more creative control, includingexposure compensation, low-light manual shutter speeds, manual ISO and whitebalance, and stitch assist, plus black-and-white, sepia, vivid, and neutralmodes.

A movie mode captures video clips with sound. Depending upon resolution, theseclips can last from 2 to 60 seconds. The limited length and resolution of theseclips guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it'sperfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to afriend or relative. In addition, you can add up to 60 seconds of audio to eachstill picture you take.

    Power
The S200 uses a proprietary lithium-ion rechargeable battery, and both thebattery and the charger are included. Though the new NB-1LH looks identical to(and is interchangeable with) the NB-1L batteries shipped with previous Elphmodels, the new battery holds 840 mAh of energy, a 23 percent increase. Becausethe battery is unique to the Elph cameras and can be nearly impossible to findwhen on the road, we strongly recommend getting a spare if you're planning totake the camera on extended outings.

    Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on standard Type I CompactFlash cards. Consider the included 8MB card a starter capacity, since its 12-picture limit means you'll need toreturn to your computer often to transfer images and free up the card for morepictures. A 128 MB card is a great size for this camera, storing around 200images. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USBcable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automaticallyrecognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.

    Printing
Canon has introduced a series of printers designed to work directly with theS200. Using these printers, no computer is required--simply connect the camerato the printer and start printing. The CP-10 produces credit-card-sized prints, and the CP-100 makes 4-by-6-inch prints. Both use continuous-tone technology forresults that are indistinguishable from traditional photos. Of course, photosfrom your Elph can also be printed on any home computer system with an inkjetprinter, sent off for online processing, or simply enjoyed on your computerscreen.

    Size
At just 3.4 by 2.2 by 1.1 inches and 6.3 ounces, the S200 is even smaller thanits predecessor, making it one of the smallest zoom digital cameras on themarket.

    Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the S200 camera, NB-1LH battery with CB-2LS charger, AV andUSB cables, wrist strap, software suite, and 8 MB memory card.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we stronglyrecommend the addition of a larger memory card (a 128 MB card holds around 200images), a spare NB-1L battery, and a compact carrying case (to protect thebrushed-metal finish and keep pocket lint out of the viewfinder). --ShaneBurnett

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE my little Elph!!!!!!!!
Well, it's been over 3 years since I had it and I love it!!! It's just awesome! It's tiny, the battery life is great, the pictures are wonderful, LOTS of features. The ONLY thing is when you're using flash, it's a little slow. I was impressed with Canon and purchased a bigger SLR Digital Rebel for my "big projects" :) But the little Elph is still my #1 point and shoot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Point and shoot that fits in your pocket
A really great camera that just slips into your pocket. Great to carry around all the time so you can take shots of whatever takes your fancy. Easy to recharge too with its handy battery recharger.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little camera!
I've had this camera for a little over a year and a half now and I just love it.It's really small, which is a huge plus.Because of the small size, it's very convenient to take with you and that means you end up taking more pictures than you normally would.I've chronicled most of the little and big events I have gone to with it.Even though it's just 2 megapixels, that is more than adequate for me--I don't rely on it for professional shots, just mostly snapshots.I have printed some photos through shutterfly, and they came out looking great. You could tell that they weren't quite as sharp as those from a regular camera, but I had taken them at the medium compression setting. They were definitely framable though and you probably couldn't tell that they were digicam pics unless you inspected them close up.I suspect pics taken at superfine would be even better.Rendition of colors is truly remarkable, and I have received many compliments from friends on this.Canon sure does seems to know what they're doing when it comes to optics.Any photos I've taken with bright colors (landscapes, flowers, etc.) came out breathtaking. The camera is made of metal, so it has a nice, high quality "heft" to it.The photo management software that it comes with is awesome--intuitive and easy to use.It may run slow on old computers though, if you have a lot of photos in your albums.

One complaint I have about the camera is that it's just okay in dark settings, even with the flash on.Also, when taking pictures of people, I seem to get red-eye a lot, even with the red-eye reduction setting on.It takes small video clips, but the resolution is very grainy and with the 64 MB card that I have in it, the maximum length of the clips is really short.

Other than that, this is a terrific, dependable camera that's perfect for the beginning digicam user or for someone who wants the convenience of a small, easily transportable camera. It comes with a far too small 8MB card, so I highly recommend getting a larger one. Also, it doesn't come with a case, so I recommend buying one because this is a beautiful camera and you wouldn't want to damage it.Canon makes one specifically for the PowerShot series that is leather and compact. You can find it at Apple stores. ... Apple 10 GB iPod (M8737LL/A, July 2002 Version)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Apple has revamped the now-classic iPod with several exceptional new features. The 10 GB model still packs 2,000 songs and a 10-hour battery life into a stunning 6.5-ounce package, but Apple ups the ante with new iTunes 3 software; a redesigned, touch-sensitive scroll wheel; red-hot FireWire digital file transfers; a wired remote control; and an overhauled calendar/scheduler.

The iPod’s setup and interface are still the same: just plug it into your Mac and all your iTunes songs and playlists are automatically downloaded into iPod at blazing FireWire speed--typically 15 seconds or less. Don’t forget that the player also doubles as a FireWire drive for applications and other files. This new model also comes with a FireWire port cover to protect the player from dirt and other gunk.

In addition to its 10 GB hard drive, iPod has a 32 MB memory cache. The cache is made of solid-state memory, meaning that it has no moving parts, so it's not affected by movement of the device. Skip protection on the iPod works by continually preloading up to 20 minutes of music into the cache.

The iPod has a large, high-quality LCD (liquid crystal display) for viewing up to six lines of text. And the LCD features an LED (light-emitting diode) backlight for clear visibility in low-light situations--indoors or outdoors. Pocket-size and just 6.5 ounces, it weighs appreciably less than the stack of CDs it can store music from.

Featuring Apple's new iTunes 3 software, the iPod can synchronize with newly added music files and playlists. Simply plug the iPod back into your Mac and the changes are automatically updated in seconds. And with iTunes 3, you can rip MP3s, create playlists, and burn custom CDs all from one simple interface. And thanks to a cool new partnership with audible.com, you can now download audiobooks to the iPod.

You can also download your calendar and schedule to the iPod from applications like Entourage, Palm Desktop, and Mac OS X Address Book. Plus, the iPod now has a built-in digital clock.

The iPod's rechargeable lithium-polymer battery is charged using the FireWire cable when connected to your Mac. You can also recharge the iPod using the included FireWire cable and AC adapter when you're on the go.

The iPod supports MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR (variable bit rate), WAV, and AIFF files, and is firmware upgradable. To use the iPod with your Mac, you'll need a FireWire port and you must be running either Mac OS 9.2.1 (or later) or Mac OS X 10.1 (or later).

The unit comes with a wired remote control, revamped earbud-style headphones, a FireWire cable, power adapter, CD-ROM with iTunes 3, and a carrying case with belt clip. It's backed by a 90-day limited warranty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
Before I start, I want to say that you should definitely buy the newer ipod (it just came out yesterday), because it is cheaper, and looks to be even better than mine (this one).

I have had the ipod for eight months now, and it is still working perfectly well, showning just how durable it is (i have put it through quite a bit). Also, the controls are incredibly easy to learn and understand, even for the technically inept. another thing that I really like about the ipod, other than the sheer quantity of music that it holds, is the size of the screen, as well as the backlight, which is very bright. The large screen makes it wonderfully easy to see all of the information about the song. The final thing that I really love about the ipod is the fact that you canupgrade the software that it uses whenever apple comes out with a new version of the software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Factor in the cost of new headphones
    'Destroy the Neodymium transducer magnets!'

No, it's not a line from Star Trek. Rather, it's the first thing you'll need to do when you unpack your new iPod: throw away the supplied headphones and buy a decent pair.

Although Apple says the 'New iPod headphones are smaller in size, with new Neodymium transducer magnets for enhanced bass response, smoother midrange transitions, and accurate high-end reproduction' I personally found them uncomfortable to wear, and, more to the point, poor in sound quality.

Good headphones will add immensely to your satisfaction as an iPod owner. Be prepared to buy them!

On the plus side, you'll get the hang of using an iPod in about 5 minutes. (It really is possible to use it with just one hand.) And if you have a Mac-iTunes-iPod system set-up, updating your digital music collection is a breeze. (Windows users now have the same ease of use, apparently.) The iPod had a battery life problem which has now been solved, although (I haven't actually timed mine) I doubt you'll get 10 hours playback from a single charge, as claimed.

What about the sound? Hardly a minor issue for a music player, after all.

Apple's copywriters (a group not, on the whole, given to understatement) claim that '...(the iPod's) high-output (60-mW) amplifier provides CD-quality sound with a wide dynamic range. The result? Deep, pulse-pounding bass and sharp, crystal-clear highs.'

    Ummmmm...yes and no.

The iPod provides a good, balanced sound for most types of music, with clear (not too trebly) highs. Light jazz and acoustic guitar sound pretty good. However, its bass does lack punch to some extent. (The built-in equaliser doesn't really help.) A Sony Minidisc player (or, if you want to step back into the Jurassic analog era, even a Sony Walkman) provides much punchier, crisper sound, but then again, you don't get to carry 2,000 songs with you.

Pros: Very ease to use; reliable. Clean interface.

Cons: Supplied headphones are a waste of space. Wimpy bass; struggles with some genres of music. Battery not user-replaceable.

I bought my speakers refurbished, even though they're refurbished I can not complain.I love the way the bass sounds. The highs are clear and there is no distortion.I recommend these speakers to anyone who wants to buy them.I tried the altec lansing 200watt speakers and truly they can't compete with the Logitech z-560's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.Use it right, it will work great.
I bought mine refurbished(...).I figure mine is probably one of the unit some dim bulb blew out, and Logitech fixed it.

I have the volume turned up 60% on my PC.I turn off any effects since I want my sound natural.I turn the bass all the way down and use the 4.1 from my sound.

The sound gets extremely loud at only 30% on the knob, that's with only 60% on the OS volume.I figure, some people have it on full on their PC and when they turn it up on the speaker, it blows it out.

The back of my unit doesn't really get that hot.

I have the grilles removed since they do color the sound a bit.The sub is under my desk in a corner so despite the bass knob all the way down, it still shakes the wall.

So far I have NO complaints about this. The highs aren't as smooth as the Pro-Medias, but these kick the pro medias (...)in the mid range-bass department. After they've been broken in, it becomes nearly indishtinguisable from the highs of the Pro-Media.These are barely breaking a sweat where the Klipschs start to crackle.

Follow the volume settings and these things will last you forever.I've had mine for almost a year now and it continues to sound better every day.

It's so powerful that I don't think I'll ever get to fully use it (That's like owning a Formula 1 car and driving it around city streets) or my Wife will kill me.
