4-0 out of 5 stars Good outline
I'm currently reading other books on the Panthers, and I can say that Boyd's Black Panthers for Beginners is a pretty good introduction to the activist group. He seems to outline the history of the Party and the reasons for its popular appeal.

The book would be a very good gift/read for young students; however, I hope this book will lead readers to read primary sources and more extended works about the Panthers. For example, one should definitely follow up Boyd's "Beginners" with a reading of Huey P. Newton's memoir "Revolutionary Suicide" and other works by Panther members.

The only problem I had with this book is that the author didn't include enough about the "survival" programs of the Party which included the community schools and breakfast programs. Understandably it was important for Boyd to focus on Party's constant run in with the racist police force, but when you finish the book thatpart of the Party becomes the lasting impression you get of the Party. It almost seems like that history of the Party was little more than a history of police raids, informants, murder raps, court appearances, acquittals, and violence. While this reality existed, it's important that we understand the vision of the Party.

Lastly, I would hope this work inspires a definitive biography of the Black Panther Party. It needs to be written by someone who understands the vision of the Party but at the same time will work to describe the problems that ultimately bring the Party down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book for someone interested in Black History

5-0 out of 5 stars What happened to black power...
This is an amazing book by an amazing man.He founded the Black Panther Party with Bobby Seale, and he has gone down in history with pretty much the same rap as the Black Panthers: violent black power freaks. This is simply not true and this book sheds some real light on the man and his legacy of non-violent revolution.

I recommend this book to any young person age 16+

5-0 out of 5 stars HUEY P. NEWTON AND THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY CHANGED HISTORY
'This re-issue of TO DIE FOR THE PEOPLE opens a window on Huey Newton and the Black Panther Party - on of the most dynamic and revolutionary organizations ever to exist. In these selections from Huey's writings and speeches, readers can trace the development of the activist personal and political thinking as well as the radical changes that took place in the politics, ideology and actions of the Black Panther Party.

'With a rare and persuasive honesty, TO DIE FOR THE PEOPLE records the Party's internal struggles, rivalries, and contradictions, and the result is a fascinating look at a young revolutionary group determined to find ways to deal with the injustice it saw in US society.

'Huey P. Newton - co-founder of the Black Panther Party with Bobby Seale - was its chief theoretician. Huey has long been a hero to many and is currently being rediscovered by people interested in the revolutionary struggle of Black people for liberation.

'Toni Morrison, whose acclaimed novels include BELOVED, SULA and JAZZ, edited this book for its initial publication in 1972.'

2-0 out of 5 stars what a major misfire!
In case you don't know, Assata Shakur was a one-time Black Panther member who was accused of complicity in the murder of a New Jersey state trooper back in '73.She was imprisoned, beaten, and tried -- finally escaping and making her way to Cuba as a political refugee, where she currently lives and works.

Well, Assata's book is totally awful:it's gotta be one of the worst "this-is-the-real-story" efforts I've ever read.Nevertheless, the book is generally well-written and interesting.

To explain myself:I have long made a point of reading about and studying the cases of blacks who are falsely (or at least controversially) imprisoned.

So I have read with great interest and profit books by Nelson Mandela, Ruben "Hurricane" Carter, George Jackson, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Eldrige Cleaver, etc.

Well, the reason I say Ms. Shakur's book is awful is this:

Before picking it up, I knew nothing about her case. Unfortunately, now, after reading the book, I'm convinced that Assata was in fact responsible for that murder!

And I maintain this is a major problem for the author, as sympathetic as I usually am to people - especially blacks -- in similar predicaments.Since this is the only book I've read on the subject, I didn't come to it with any preconceptions except, if anything, prejudicial compassion.

What a disaster.I mean, when you write a book from prison (or exile), you've totally got the floor. There are no editors; you can't be censored; it's all your point of view; you're totally in charge of what's said and what's not said, etc.

Nevertheless, despite total authorial control, when Assata tries to convince you she didn't do it, you just wind up not believing her.Like I said, she can write well, but utlimately in vain.

Message to Assata:you've gotta ask yourself:what are you doing at the typewriter? If this, your only chance to clear your name, manages instead to convince readers that you in fact did it, why are you even bother to write?Just clam it and most people will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Next time get someone else to write your story for you!Sheesh!

A wrongly-imprisoned person railroaded by a corrupt, racist system is one thing; plain ol' murder is another.

1-0 out of 5 stars Assata......hmm
Assata Shakur rightfully deplores racism, then goes on to make racial remarks throughout her autobiography. She is fixated on the racism issue to an extreme. An example of this would be when she describes meeting a Cuban who is black, and finds herself shocked that he actually considers himself Cuban and not black. She also describes a white doctor throughout the book who she claims wasn't qualified to treat her, but who actually makes the same diagnosis as the black doctor who later treated her. I do think she has reason for the hate so prevalent in her writing, but she goes overboard. Also, I found it odd how she describes shoplifting while growing up, but somehow can't possibly be responsible for committing multiple robberies. It's all a racist conspiracy! I don't know whether she killed that police officer, but reading this book I'm inclined to think that she had the hatred within her to commit such a crime. Pigs is how she constantly refers to police officers. She also sounds very narcissitic throughout her book, by painting herself in the same light as more prominent revolutionaries. I don't think so.

5-0 out of 5 stars So You Think Your a Revolutionary?
let start by saying; i hate autobiographies! yet two that have set my spirit on fire we Malcolm X's and Assata Shakur's. each opened my eyes to the struggles of the people during the 60's and 70's. showed the lengths the goverment went to to thwart the civil rights movement, the fight for equality and anyone involved.

So You Think Your a Revolutionary? well read this book and find out what a true Revolutionary is. Assata's book was deep because it's rare that we are able to read of the hardships faced by the SISTA's involved in the struggle. of how the goverment treated her like an animal, keeping her caged up for years while framing her for various crimes to which Assata wasnt involved. i loved how the sister remained strong during this time....had it been, i would have folded! what was REALLY GREAT is how Assata was honest about her time with the Black Panthers. for as great as the Panthers were, Assata lets you know....it wasnt all lovely on the inside. just reading this book made my blood boil and my mind fill with rage. funny thing is, the things that happened to Assata during the 70's are still happening today. funny how things change but remain the same.

Assata Shakur...Peace and Blessings to you sister. i am your humble student for life. thank you for opening my eyes to your struggle. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good foundation.
This book is comprised of documents, and historical accounts of black history all the way from biblical references to the concept of being black as a curse, to Nat Turner, to Malcom X and black separatism. It's a very easy read, and starts off primarily offering background into the documents, and then later discussing the implications of them. There are some instances in the book where the reader could misconstrue the writing to be biased and injust, but in all honesty, the book was written in 1968, and I think the retrospect afforded by this fact justifies this. Overall this was a very well written, and important book in black history, and I only wish it was continued on, as history is a continual process. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only
This is my first read by Dr. West.I was surprised that it did not seem very scholarly but very opinionated with no references and no bibliography. However some of his views were on point and others were way off base. For instance, it was disappointing that he disagreed with the Afrocentrists, but at the same time used some of their ideas in other parts of the book to make his opinionated point. Anyhow a good read for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book.I have news for Pat Wang (reviewer below)

1-0 out of 5 stars A painful read
I had to force myself to get through this book due to a philosophy assignment I had to write on it. The payoff was that I got to write a 6 page critique of it at the end. That's where I shined. This book is just dying to be criticised the way it was written. To put it plain and simple Race Matters is a book written by a racist. He is so anti-white and anti-American and from what I could tell he was leaning toward anti-Jew, I was thouroughly disgusted. Page after page of negativity and no solutions in sight. Not to mention errors and that absolute absence of footnotes to back up any of his statements or information. If you are going to read this book make sure you have Google handy, you are going to need it. I would like to say you should also have a dictionary handy but alot of words you won't find in the dictionary. Why, might you ask, would they not be in the dictionary? Maybe because he was making them up. That was my best guess. There has to be better material out there than this. I urge you to find it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Derrick Bell is perhaps best known for the principled stand he took at Harvardin 1990 when he quit his tenured position on the law-school faculty to protest the school'sfailure to grant tenure to a black woman. Now a visiting professor at New York LawSchool, Bell is still deeply interested in issues of race relations and has chosen to explorethe subject fictionally in Afrolantica Legacies. In a nutshell, the story goes likethis: a mysterious land mass suddenly appears in the Atlantic Ocean, a fabulous island onwhich only black people can survive. American blacks set sail to the island to begin anew life, only to see it sink again before they can reach the shore. On the return trip toAmerica, the passengers draw up a list of principles called the Afrolantica Legacies, defining how they want to reposition themselves in American society.

The stories Bell tells to illustrate his points are narrated by Geneva Crenshaw, a characterhe has used in earlier fiction. Racism, government conspiracies against blacks, andJewish-black relations are the subjects here, and heroes of African American history suchas Marcus Garvey, ThurgoodMarshall, and Nat Turner allmake appearances. Depending on which side of the black/white divide you happen tostand, Bell's take on race relations in America will either seem right on the money or verygrim indeed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Look at Race Relations
Derrick Bell is the well known former Harvard law professor who left his tenured position at Harvard because of the school's refusal to deal equitably with women of color. He has written a number of books, and those featuring Geneva Crenshaw are among his best. This latest book focuses on racism, and takes a deeper look at Jewish-black relationships, and the property rights in white skin color. While most thinking black Americans wouldn't find much to challenge here, many whites will find this a disturbing book on a number of levels.

The statement made by the fictional president of the USA that "we can no longer afford whiteness as an assumed right of citizenship" is one which should engender serious thinking among whites who want to really understand 21st century America. Even though this book was published in 1998, the issues it raises have not disappeared with the change in the century, increased numbers of "mixed" race children, and increased intermarriage between American blacks and others.

Would I buy this book? Yes. Would I keep it? Yes. This is a worthy read with plenty to think about.

5-0 out of 5 stars FAscinating
What I found most impressive about this book is the way it challenges assumptions and attitudes about Jewish racism and hegemony. Bell is a courageous and brilliant writer, and this is the best novel I have read inseveral months. And as a feminist and white woman, I found it much moreinteresting than many other books by white writers who attempt to addressthese issues. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem. Bell Is Right on Target
Derrick Bell returns to his "legal fiction", which again proves fascinating. Prof. Bell amplifies the sub rosa elements of race relations in the US, and holds them up to the light. This is a great read for any thinking person. Not to be missed. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring Rage
When I checked out this book from the library, I was very excited about reading it.When I actualy read it, I was very sorry that I even wasted my time trying to track this book down.First of all, He spends too much time talking about his childhood, that simply has no meaning. It is also some confusing parts about his exit of the Black Panthers. In his comrade Elaine Brown's "Taste of Power", Brown states that Bobby Seale was kicked out of the Black Panther Party, but Bobby Seale ends the book, that he left instead of being thrown out. This is just one of the most dreadful books that I have read in a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars a lonely rage is awesome
Written in 1978 after bobby had left the party, this account fills in all the gaps in bobby's life. His childhood experiances that shape his life into who he would later become are so essential in understanding seale. His stories will not be given away by me cause this story speaks very well for itself. Sorry but there is not to much to say if you dug sieze the time, or even if you didn't. If you are interested in african americans who fought hard for social justice, this book is key. Seale is a great story teller, you wont just find ideological essay's here,...Great book, needs to be back in print. ... Read more

What can I say, that hasn't already been said?Huey P. Newton was a very complex individual, and I find myself reading a section over a second time to digest what was written. It's worth it no doubt. When you start to read this book, you will not be disappointed, Newton sheds light on even personal matters like falling in love, and views on family. This is great if you want specifics on Mr. Newton himself, and not just the BPP as a whole.

Editorial Review

In 1993, the Digable Planets, a trio of New York MCs with happy insect monikers (Doodlebug, Butterfly, and Ladybug) and nonthreatening auras, created manna for the pseudo-beatnik crowd. On Reachin': A New Refutation of Time and Space they melded jazz records, hip-hop beats, and rhymes--like Gang Starr and the Dream Warriors before them. Much to their dismay, the single "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," which combined their be-boppy flows with a catchy Art Blakey loop, captured the clove cigarette contingent. Their sleeper follow-up, Blowout Comb was a De La Soul-esque reaction to their pop success. They forsook the bohemians (and probably scared them as well) by waxing poetic about the Black Panthers and Fidel Castro and giving shout-outs to their peeps in the Five Percent Nation of Islam. Loaded with live instrumentation, the album includes "Black Ego," an interpolation of a popular Meters composition laced with nice guitar plucks, and "K.B.'s Alley," where a schizophrenic trombone perfectly complements their wordplay. Despite strong guest spots by vet female DJ Jazzy Joyce, Guru, and Jeru the Damaja, it's the hidden messages, somber mood, and understated beats of "9th Wonder (Blackitolism)" or "Dial 7 (Axiom Of Creamy Spies)" that outshine the gloss of their debut. --Dalton Higgins ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic and odd.
This album is great. The beats are odd but really really good. The only negative thing with this album is that the emcees aren't the best, but they are ok. I still think that it's worth five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blowout Comb
In this fickle world of popular art, there are many artists who were not given the opportunity to fully bless the world with their talents.Right at the very top of that list is Digable Planets.

In 1993, DP dropped their debut album and gained fame via the infectiousness of the single "Rebirth of the Slick (Cool Like That)."Unfortunately however, as pop audiences are wont to do, the group earned a label, and because of their love of the jazz culture, the members of Digable Planets were considered neo-hippies despite the considerable talent and intelligence (although depending on your political stance that may or may not be a bad thing) shown throughout the album.

In response, Digable Planets did the same thing that De La Soul had done five years prior. They recorded a darker, and in the DPs case, better follow up.Anyone who purchased this album thinking to get more cool like that's was definitely surprised. On this album, the DPs made perfectly clear that they were not just some token jazz/hip hop act.The tones are much more adult and political. And in my personal opinion, this is the best jazz-influenced album ever made.Yeah, A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr and the Roots all deserve the props that they've gotten over the years, but at the same time Digable Planets deserve to be mentioned in the same breaths.

My favorite track on this album is the collaboration with Jeru the Damaja, "Graffitti."And this album was definitely making noise, noise, noise, noise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid but Detached Second Round
Digable Planets had their work cut out for them in following up their first release, "Reachin'", one of the best hip hop recordings of all times. While "Blowout Comb" doesn't echo the same kind of magic inherent in "Reachin", its a valiant effort nonetheless.

The CD starts of strong and demands your attention with "May 4th Movement" and "Black Ego", but quickly settles into an aloof and sometimes indifferent sound that tends to blend in more than stand out. The CD takes the listener out on a high note with the quintessential Digable sound on "9th Wonder (Blackitolism)" and "For Corners".

"Blowout Comb" is a noteworthy sophomore effort from the world's best hip hop band, and in the end, holds its own in the overwhelming shadow of "Reachin". Can't wait for their third . . . ... Read more

Editorial Review

This nifty Blaster is packed with power and fun. Load suction-tipped foam darts into the eight barrels, build up the air pressure with a few pumps, and pull the trigger. The dart travels 15 feet easily. Pump again and the next dart advances automatically. The multicolored Blaster is easy to use and has the feel of a pump-action shotgun. The gun itself is 20 inches long, 4.5 inches wide behind the barrel, and 9.25 inches from the base of the grip to the top of the unit. Darts are 2.5 inches long. The packaging reminds you not to aim at people or animals and not to insert objects other than foam darts in the Blaster. --Louise Carter ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars mediocre range, accuracy, and rate of fire
Good gun I have the blue model and the yellow is supposed to be better but the green worse. It has good range with one or two pumps and seems for semi-close combat. Much Much better than the Air Tech 3000 Fun: good for semi-close combat. Educational everybody needs to learn to defend themselves. Durability it seems strong but I haven't had it long. buy it

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good gun
This gun is not a very good one.It changes barrels when it is not supposed to.In battle the pump broke and I got took apart by anouther nerf gun (te wild fire) which is also not a very good gun. If you add all this up its a pretty bad gun.If your going to buy a nerf shot gun get the Nerf Air tech 4000 or the 3000.

4-0 out of 5 stars it's ok.....
This gun is ok.So is its range. Some barrols do not shoot. But if you are willing to take a chance in combat get it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is this a joke?
When I read 2.25 HP being described as "powerful," I thought this must be some kind of sick joke.I use chainsaws all the time with my carcasses, and 16" ain't nothing.First of all, let's get one thing straight, o.k.? Electric chainsaws have their limitations. That being said, I could still use it for chopping down trees and roundin up firewood. However, as for my, shall we say, clandestine operations, I have found this Milwaukee variety of chainsaw to be less than cutting edge, pardon the pun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings
I purchased this chainsaw in March 2001 and immediately noticed oil leaking. I notified a Milwaukee representative who informed me that a small leakage of oil was normal but if the oil reservoir was empty then I should bring it to a service dealer. I finally did this once I was convinced that it was leaking too much and after waiting about 4 weeks I was informed that the parts needed were still on back order. In turn for my inconvenience I was given a new chain saw. Unfortunately, this new chain saw is doing the same thing. I have put out an inquiry regarding this problem to Milwaukee but still have not heard back.
I must say that I am very satisfied with the way this chain saw works and easily cuts through large sized logs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too slow
If you want to buy an iBook, buy a faster one. This one just can't run any modern software.Heck, it isn't much good for old software.Go for the 700MHZ G3 or don't bother! If you need to run any graphics software then buy a G4.My G3 can't hack Adobe anything! If I could go back I would buy a G4 based Powerbook (I use one at work).

5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar !!
I am one of those switchers (apple.com/switch). I worked on mac 5 years ago, loved it but couldn't afford one. So I have spent the last 5 years in the PC family. Just bought the iBook. It's absolute perfection. No problem to switch files, so easy to use. I now have an ipod, a digital camera. I completely (re)adopted Mac's digital life.
Have no fear to get rid of your PC and ride a Mac. You will notice the difference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE revolutionary handbook
He covers everything from what to carry while engaging in guerrilla warfare to how to wage the propoganda war. A lot of it is Cuba-specific though. Like China, Cuba's popular uprising was cultivated in the rural areas with a promise of agrarian reform. This was a departure from the Marxism/Leninism focus on the industrial proletariat. For the industrialized world, Che's insistance on sparking the revolution from rural areas would likely fail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Behind Che's 'foco' theory
A very insightful description of what was like to fight a guerrilla warfare in Latin America in the revolutionary 1960s. However, I would say that instead of being the "bible" for revolutionary guerrillas, Che's book was more or less a set of guidelines that drew most of its theory from his experience in Cuba. Che thought the conditions for guerrilla warfare could be created, rather than resulting from a set of vital circumstances for a revolutionary army to evolve, such as widespread discontent with the status quo and a pattern of repression that comes prior to a popular armed struggle. Again, because Che takes his theory from the Cuban campaign, it only deals with rural warfare,in a predominantly rural country. Forty years afterwards, most of the population in Latin America live in Urban centers, and Che's theory is far outdated to deal with events nowadays

In "guerrilla warfare" Che still highlights an unavoidable truth: strong support from the population is vital to keep an insurgency alive, if not victorious.

The "Shining Path" guerrillas in Peru lost popular ground because they alienated the peasants by repressing them as bad as the Army

In Colombia, the FARC have lost to the army vast areas formerly under its control because they have engaged in atrocities that have brought about considerable support in favor of a hardline government

In contrast, the Zapatistas in southern Mexico still are holding on, because they have not only support in their country, but also abroad

The reviewer who said that guerrillas (not 'gorillas') could no longer deal with a sophisticated counterinsurgency army, may want to give a look at the Iraqi fiasco. A growing and more sophisticated (in tactics, not in equipment) guerrilla campaign is being fought every hour of the day in Iraq, with no sign of slowing down. I wish some good book about modern Urban guerrilla warfare, apart from Urbano's, would come out any time soon, in which the Iraqi model could analysed and compared to other similar situations

2-0 out of 5 stars Che'
An interesting read...if you're in the process of trying to overthrow a third-world dictatorship....With the exception of Cuba, Che was never involved in a successful, much less serious, insurgency against a standing government. Many of the lessons taught by Che in the book, some of which were practiced by the Viet Cong are useless against a well equipped and trained counter-insurgency force, as was the case in the later part of Vietnam. A fact few people realize is that the Viet Cong insurgency had been crushed by the end of the tet offensive, and even before then their achievments had been minimal at best. Che's own lessons, in the end, helped very few people, including himself. The Congo was a disaster for him, and in the end he was killed by Bolivian forces guided by CIA operatives and Green Berets. ... Read more
