1-0 out of 5 stars Does not work
I have had this item for one month. Despite many hours spent with customer service (most of them "on hold") it still does not work properly. Some of the customer service people try to help but several have been quite rude. Now I am shipping it back for service. They will not refund my money nor will they give me a new computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compaq Presario SR1820NX Desktop PC
Seems to be an excellent desktop. Bought it for 2 of my sons. Has everything he wanted for web design, school use, downloading music, watching DVD's, gaming or just creating DVD's. Easy to use straight out of box. The AMD processor is fast & strong. I've been using a Dell for years and I think I'll buy myself one, next.

3-0 out of 5 stars Returned it
After it loaded Windoze XP, it kept re-booting (about 10 times before I called teh Help Desk). They guided me thru a restore and re-load - very patient.Still a problem - kept re-booting indefinitely.HP recommended returning it which I did.Since I needed it right away I went to the local Circuit City store and bought an HP - no problems at all and $20 less for same equipment.Still waiting for my refund from Amazon. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a simple home PC, not much more
I've had this PC for more than a month. And have been largely satisfied, with a few caveats. This is not a high-end machine, and I'd recommend considering it only if all you want from your PC is regular home use - browsing, some music etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars I'm back with a new-style of review for you guys. But I gotta make it quick!
Wow, it's been a-while since I've actually bothered to sit down and write a review. I mean, I've been reviewing a LOT of things in day to day life (that's just how I live my life), I just haven't found anything that stimulated me enough to want to tell my fans about it. The good news is I think I've got something here that I can review for you guys that will help me get-back into the swing of things, tell you valuable information about a product, not to mention give me the chance to have a crack at my Dad's brand new computer. Basically he has been very stingy with it since it arrived last week. I was told that since I "ruined" his last computer and caused it so many problems, I was not to be allowed access to this new one. Ever. But since I've always got my fans in mind, the review must go on. I've been patiently waiting for an oppourtunity to get my hands on this thing for a while now. Actually what I'm going to do is bring you one of my special new-style of reviews just for this product. It will be a sort of Covert-Ops-Review since I've had to perform all sorts of espionage, trickery, and deception to deliver it to you guys. Anyways, let's review!

4-0 out of 5 stars a pretty good buy
I never have been able to afford a top-of-the-line computer, so all my experiences have been with models that come with a complaint or two. This is my second Compaq Presario and as with the first one, it's about what I expected. It is the first Athlon processor for me, and it seemed slow to me. I check and the computer systems said it was under 1 GHz. That confused me, as this 3500+ is supposed to be approximately 2.2 GHz. I called the 24/7 support number(which is great btw. No more website FAQs if you don't want to spent an hour searching and not finding what you're looking for!) and the tech explained to me that it was program driven, meaning it speeds up on demand. He had me turn off the energy saver and there it was, 2.2 GHz! So things are starting up faster and the small delays on the internet are gone. I don't know if "delays" are characteristic of Athlon processors or not, but apparently there are things you can do about it.
1-0 out of 5 stars 45 min to load
Ok lots of good reviews but my experiance is a bad one.Took me 45 min to load the first time. Restarts take about 8 min or so.Keeps locking up for no apparent reason.I will be taking this one back.Sounds like a great deal at the store but after getting home and trying to work with it, not impressed. My emachine that I was replacing is faster than this compaq that I bought at CompUsa.I will not recommend this machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Greatprice for what you get!
Like others have said, you really got a lot for the price, I got mine for $499 with a 17' flat panel CRT monitor! (This was after $250 in rebates.) Great deal! It's amazing to me that the 1710NX was selling for $419 for just the CPU and only has 256 MB of RAM 100 Gig hard drive and no DVD Burner or Lightscribe! Also no monitor included! Also, this was has an AMD Athlon 64 3500 versus a Sempron on the 1710NX model. Also has a better keyboard. (No flat hard to type on keys.) I am very happy with this product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Runs great
Runs great if you upgrade the RAM from the 256MB (supplied) to 512 or more. I added 512 MB to mine resulting in 768 MB. Easy to set-up and upgrade. If you buy one, make sure to download updated video driver from Compaq.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get the 1720NX instead
I am returning it for the 1720NX model due to the fact it only has 256 MB RAM. I didn't know how important RAM was until I tried to run a 3-D game. You can always expand the RAM, but the 1720NX is only $60 more (at one store) and has 512 RAM, a 160 GB hard drive, and a DVD writer with lightscribe technology. Worth the $60? Yeah, I would say so. Why compaq made this model I have no clue, since they have a better model that runs for less that $100 more at most stores. ... Read more

I am a technology educator and I have had this system in my home for over 6 months.Bottom line - it runs great. You get a lot of features for the money.I bought mine at a local retailer on sale for [sale price]and have been pleased with its performance. The quality of this systems hardware has been very good.In fact it seems no worse than the Dells I work with everyday with teachers and students. The CPU case is easy to open and access.5-0 out of 5 stars The Reason why is called 1900+ (same as Penium4 1.9GHZ)

The product also includes a 40 GB hard disk, integrated graphics, a56K modem, and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet NIC. In addition, the Presario 5410USfeatures Windows XP Home as the pre-installed operating system. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Performance for Price
I bought this comp Refurbished, so i didnt have to go through all of the registration n junk. The first thing i did was download an MP3 with WinMx, the modem in this thing works WAY better than my old modem. I normally connect @ 52Kbps and get more consistent downloading. Another thing is it is VERY quiet which is always a good thing. And the CD Burner, works like a charm. Ive only used this a few times but i tell ya, ive got no idea how to use up even 20 GB of space, let alone 40. The burner was quiet even when burning, the DVD drive is also quiet when being used. The only thing that keeps it down is on the RAM side, kinda low for upgradeability(but hey, we dont even NEED 256MB ram now) and bad bad integrated Intel Graphics(but hey, it has an AGP port so thats easily fixable). Otherwise, a speedy little Gem for just 750 bucks, you cant go wrong if your lookin to have a computer that runs you avereage programs nicely and can burn music good and provides you with nice upgradeability

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better deal than the 5400.
This model addresses some of the short-comings of the 5400. It is, for just a little more money, already network/broadband-ready (it has a built-in network interface card). It also adds double the RAM, double the hard drive space and a little bit better CPU (processor speed), though this is still a Celeron-based computer and as such will not be great with complex graphics tasks (eg. gaming and CAD). In any case, for the price, this is more than adequate for most users and is clearly a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of positives, only a few drawbacks.
You might read that this level of computer is for the "entry-level" and beginner. Well, I've had a computer of one type or another since PRE-Windows 3.1! Yes, DOS days. And this is an excellent choice for the money. Check around. Most others with a DVD and CD-RW drive are [price]. And these things could not be easier to set up. 10 min. out of the box, easily. And, it could not be easier to add memory (which is what I did today). Click a switch, pull the side panel off. Drawbacks? Personally, I don't like the CD holder out front. And Windows XP is still pretty qerky, despite the massive hype. It especially doesn't like older hardware (surprise, surprise). But with some tweaking, everything is working. And Windows XP is certainly the most stable OS you'll ever see. Read more

If you're looking for a well-equipped but still affordable multimedia, gaming, or home and family system, you'll like the Presario 5102US. It has a fast AMD Athlon processor running at 1 GHz, 128 MB RAM (expandable to 720 MB), and a 40x read/8x write CD-RW drive. A 40 GB hard disk drive provides ample storage for all but the most demanding multimedia applications, and a 56K modem and 100 Mbps networking are included. The installed operating system is Windows Me, Microsoft's consumer-oriented platform. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Computer bad buy
I bought this computer in January of 2002. I have had so many problems with it. Every time I would call up compaq I would wait 2-6 hours just to talk to a support specialist then they would transfer me and again i would wait an additional 1-6 hours. I don't have the patience to wait and if you don't have 10 hours a month to wait on hold with compaq don't buy a compaq.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not too shabby, but.....
it still suffers from some typical Compaq flaws. This is a handy all around household unit with some gaming features that make it more playable than the 5400. Certainly, the price isn't bad either. However, it does not include a monitor, which you'll need to buy separately. The machine's limitations for gamers lie in its limited, mothboard-bound graphics capabilities (a result of the low power NVidia card) and its mediocre ESS sound. There is an aqequate sized hard drive and a pretty good 12X CD burner, so MP3 collectors will not suffer too much. Anyway, like I said, it's a good, basic machine and if that's your interest, you'll be happy with the unit. I should point out that expanding these Compaqs (a lot like their HP bretheren) is a daunting task; things are tight in the case and adding cards and drives is a challenge, so you better like the machine the way you get it, and not the way you envision it upgraded. Lastly, Compaq's reliability has been acceptable, though its service has been less so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compaq the Weapon of Choice
I own a lesser of the line of Compaq (I have a 950 mhz). I have tried Windows XP though. I find that Compaq is a very high quality product. It is up with Dell, above Hewlett Packard. I highly suggest that you do no purchase a Hewlett Packard because of many reasons (see my review on it). I like the audio, keyboard, and all the small things about a Compaq. CD-RW write drives are a must for the future. Windows XP is wonderful for multiple users. It has a sign in screen. You can personalize your sign in with things such as your own wallpaper, sounds, pointing arrow, etc. I also prefer Windows above Apple. Apple is only good if you are looking for the most simplicity. ... Read more
