Great computer ...
I bought this computer at a local retail store on ... At the time there were no product specs on the HP/Compaq website. Now there are. I finally found out what memory to buy to upgrade to 512mb... I also added a PNY GEForce MMX 440 64 DDR with TV out video card .... I downloaded the latest Microsoft Nvidia driver. Now the computer is increadibly fast. I played the "Die Another Day" DVD on the computer and it was flawless even in full screen. I plugged in a pair of SONY headphones (not powered) and the sound was fantastic!!. I loaded Medal of Honor Allied Assault and played the game for 4 hours. No lockups whatsoever. I have copied and burned numerous songs from cd to cd. The audio tracks sound great. I have never had a better performing or faster computer than this one. Now all I have to do is upgrade to broadband internet and I will have the total package. Huge hard-drive that operates at 8.9 ms seektime and extremely quiet. This computer is definitely a good buy for the price.

An excellent buy
Fast processor, huge hard disk, DVD & CD-RW. (The pre-installed XP includes software for both.) No speakers, however, and it only supports the powered variety. RAM is a little low for gaming/graphics, but that's still a cheap upgrade (and the system will support up to 1GB). Still kickin' after all these years...
This is a comment from mid-2006, so understand that the four stars are kinda relative:I'm saying this can be a good PC for the kind of user who wants to run serious office-type software, get on the Internet and maybe do a bit of amateur photo editing on the side.I'm not recommending a 5 year old machine for state-of-the-art gaming or for pro level graphics and photo manipulation!(This should be obvious, but I thought I'd better say it anyway.)
Compaq Presario 5012US
Aside from the fact that it's difficult to find a way to remove the drives - no screws that I've found, I got a run around when trying to obtain tech support. It seems that a common problem is with the CD drive door eventually opening and closing non-stop without being able to read a disk. Compaq wouldn't even send me a restore disk that wasn't included when I bought my computer new. Of course, they would let me buy one which I didn't. My extended warranty is basically worthless, and all Compaq and HP did was try to get me to pay even more money for additional phone support. It looks like I'll have to pay for a new CD drive myself or fix it. I'd never buy another Compaq or HP product. To me, service and reliability go hand in hand.

It wasn't so long ago that desktops in this price range were incapable of anything other than absolute basic tasks. But with the new Presario SR1000 series of personal computers, Compaq proves those days are over. Similar in many respects to the entry-level Presario SR1010NX but with enough enhancements to bring it up to midlevel status, the Presario SR1020NX won't quite suit ultra-demanding business environments or dedicated gaming studios, but it will definitely fit right in to most any home, home office or school dorm environment.Driven by a cost-efficient Intel Celeron processor running at 2.8 GHz, an ample 512 MB main memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video controller with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario SR1010NX is not a world-class speed machine or 3-D powerhouse. However, for basic computer duties such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic communication and homework, it is more than adequate. With double the memory of the SR101ONX, it will deliver adequate multitasking performance right out of the box. However, gamers will definitely need to add a faster video card to enjoy smooth graphics in 3-D games.Data handling options are also much improved over the entry-level model. Apart from the standard 3.5-inch diskette drive, Compaq has doubled the size of the hard disk to 80 GB and replaced the CD-RW drive with a DVD/CD-RW combo drive that handles DVD playing as well as CD burning and playing. In its stock configuration, the system does not support DVD playing or writing.
