1-0 out of 5 stars Unstable & Incompatible
I purchased this product because it offered more processing power & memory than others in similar price range.5-0 out of 5 stars Great laptop for the money
I'm so pleased with this purchase. It's light, efficient, attractive, and easy to use.And as a side note, despite some criticisms, I find Windows XP intuitive and an easy fit, once I turned off the features I don't use, and that keep popping up on the screen! But all my old programs, with the exception of my printer driver, made the shift without a hitch.

4-0 out of 5 stars solid laptop
This laptop is excellent for the traveller. Battery life is above average, has enough expansion ports to almost replace a desktop. screen is bright and easy to look at, video performs well, and it works great with Windows XP Pro. I originally purchased this to replace my desktop and I think it was a good choice. It has the power, storage, and speed to keep up. The Duron 1 gig is the second generation Duron so it supports SSE and extended MMX and 3d!now extensions.. sweet! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Though its raw processor speed may initially seem somewhat average, Compaq's Presario x1040us will easily handle most typical leisure or professional mobile tasks and even many 3-D computer games and high-end 3-D graphic design programs. In fact, the unit is not only more powerful than many bigger, bulkier portable computers, but also better equipped too. For a compact, capable and full-featured notebook, you can't do much better than the futuristic Presario x1049us.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Efficient, easy to use laptop.
This is the Mellenium edition of the Compaq Presario. I use it at home, and children use it for homework and research.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm happy with it
Five stars because that's how well it has behaved over these 4 years or so. Of course, if you compare it to more modern computers it would score considerably less, but that's why it is no longer on sale here.
5-0 out of 5 stars A nice little computer
I'm not a computer aficianato or anything, but I was surprised to see so many negative reviews of this computer.

If an ultra-compact design isn't your primary concern, the Compaq Presario 3080us Notebook PC is a wise choice for your mobile computing environment. Featuring a price point not far removed from that of many entry-level units, the Presario 3080us nevertheless sports impressive power and several surprisingly upscale amenities. Take your computing life with you wherever you roam with the Compaq Presario V2670US, designed for the budget-minded mobile professional. Featuring a cool, modern metallic design, the V2670US weighs only 5.4 pounds and is as thin as 1.29 inches. The widescreen 14-inch BrightView display is easily viewable even in direct sunlight and is great for watching DVD movies in their natural aspect ratio. 5-0 out of 5 stars amazing laptop with incredible support forum
I had this laptop for a year now with no problems. A ton of used parts are available for very cheap. For example I do not have a bluetooth adapter but if I wanted I could buy one for ~$20! Replacement LCD's, Motherboards even cases are available. An amazin support forum is available over at x1000forums everyone is friendly and willing to help you with any problems you may run into. Compaq X1000's also have their own linux distro, X1000linux.

4-0 out of 5 stars First day and very happy
I just got my x1010 in the mail today. It is a referb unit but everything seems to work just find.I am sitting in the living room writing this review online via the Wi-Fi network connection.Speed seems to be very good.I like the keyboard very much and the screen is bright and clear. It will take some time getting use to the size of the screen but I think I can live with it ;-)Overall the first day out of the box impression is very good.If any of this changes I'll try to be sure to give an update. You don't really think how big the 15.4 screen is until you start walking around with it.Wow this thing is big!

5-0 out of 5 stars This isn't a "vaporware" review - I own this and love it!!
I bought our x1010 last month and I am still absolutely thrilled with it. Its very fast despite having a slow (4200 rpm) HDD.I have had zero problems with the wireless - in fact the wireless will be a no-brainer if your other wireless devices can "see" your network.I am very happy with the 32mb (dedicated) Radeon graphics. This machine will play Rainbow Six Raven Shield with no problems at all - try that on one of the Toshiba's or lower end Compaq's with shared-memory graphics!!The display is fantastic - bright and not at all "grainy" like the Toshiba's and low-end Compaq's and HP's.(Ok - the WSXGA+ would probably look even sharper).I don't know this for sure - but I think the dot-pitch on the x1000 series is .26 versus .29/.30 (mm) on the cheapie machines.Great display, great graphics power, very stable, super build quality, etc.Only a couple of potential downsides - one, its a little big to tote around the house and two, the DVD/CDRW isn't modular so you're up the creek (have to send it to Compaq) if your drive is damaged. Oh one last positive - the lid is made out of metal (aluminum I assume) so it isn't flimsy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars worst experience
I used the computer only for basic use such as using word processor or watching movies, so i enjoyed this computer until it suddenly broke down. i was watching a movie one night and it started giving me the blue screen and automatically shut down. I tried to restore it with my CD and it got worse. After few attempts, it made beep sounds. Then I was sure that the hardware itself had a problem. So I called the customer service. It took me more than 2 hours to go through all the call transfer and to explain what happened to my computer to them. They made me do all the things but I knew that those wouldn't do any thing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't ask for more
Can easily handle new games like Half Life 2, Fable, and Battlefield 2--but I still take it to class every day as it's easy to carry in my backpack and the battery lasts about an hour an a half (note to the guy who wrote the last review-I think your battery is defective).

This comp is actually the comp im using at the moment to write this review. Now the thing im noticing that strikes me is, that im sitting on the toilet writing...but how??

2-0 out of 5 stars Presario 2700EA (not US) - ticking timebomb!
Like the others I loved my little toy - good performance (but not great as I used to get the odd few crashes now and then), solid build quality and a fancy looking gagdet indeed. However, after 2 years use it has developed this annoying habit of powering down suddenly after a few minutes use. Not much good to write a thesis on which was why I bought it.
1-0 out of 5 stars REVIEW UPDATE - 06/25/2004 CLASS ACTION SUIT TIME - ANYONE??
I wrote a review on here about 9 month ago - and have received over 50+ mails with the same complaint - melted standoffs.. and HP/CPQ is STILL denying any knowledge of this problem!!! (This was independantly verified from an email from HP C/S received 3 days ago from another guy having a meltdown with his 2710 and HP service (or lack of))... - Even though "the fix" and remedy is posted all over CPQ's own tech web site as well as HP's!! -- You doubt me? Call them up, and they'll give you the replacement part # for the needed standoff screws for this "unknown problem".... Sigh...4-0 out of 5 stars A Suprising Exception to Compaq's Image
I bought this laptop in Feb. 2002 on a whim while browsing Best Buy's return aisle. It didn't have the Floppy or any of the CDs but it was about $300 cheaper than a new one. At the time I wasn't aware of Compaq's reputation for having probably the worse customer service in the known universe, but I was quickly introduced after finding myself in their 800 number black hole (a voice-prompt carousel designed to frustrate customers into hanging up); and all I wanted were the restore CDs!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent value and performance, fine durability.
I purchased this notebook a while back and chose it for potential durability. My previous notebook was a 1999 Sony VAIO PCG-F250, which bit the dust recently (hinges, drives, other wearable parts). The audio on the machine is better than what I had expected (Harman International-sourced speakers), a similar design (and AC'97 audio) is found on current eMachines (Gateway), and HP notebooks.
4-0 out of 5 stars GreatLow Cost notebook!!
I bought my R3210US two months ago and have had zero problems so far. I'm using it primarily at home as a desktop replacement for my old p111 dell dimension, although I have travelled with it some. The 15.4" widescreen is very bright and fine for watching dvd's and general web surfing. I haven't had to call tech support yet, so can't comment on that. My only nagative is that the fan is quite loud and noticeable as it cycles on and off-but I'm getting used to it. At this price point, I don't think you can beat it.
