1-0 out of 5 stars Gateway 420GR
The statistics for this computer are very nice, and the price is competitive.I thought I made a good purchase BUT I've owned it for almost two months and I HAVE NEVER USED IT!!!From the factory it DID NOT WORK! I sent it back RMA and got it back after a month and it was BROKEN AGAIN!It's now at the warehouse again. When I get it back I'll find out how it performs (if it works this time), if not I'll post updated reviews. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Convergence is a reality
I got one as an all-in-one center for images, video, TV, music, etc. It does the job well. TV image quality is excellent, and so is TV recording. Burning your favorite shows to DVD with a few button clicks is incredibly easy.5-0 out of 5 stars A nearly perfect living room PC.
The Gateway FMC-901X blends an innovative case design with high performance components. The first thing that strikes you about the Gateway Media Center is that it looks more like a piece of stereo equipment than a computer. In fact the stackable design computer is fits perfectly on top of a VCR or stereo. This was a big selling point with my wife.5-0 out of 5 stars A fine-tuned media powerhouse.
Finally a piece of gear that looks like it belongs in an AV rack.I've been Very pleased with the appearance and usability of the system.Be aware that although it looks and performs like a component, it's also a PC.It comes with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004.That means music- and photo-playback features are excellent, and the PVR functions are a close match for a dedicated TV recorder. 3-0 out of 5 stars Power Supply problem Solved!!!
I've had the same problems as everyone else. My computer dies and won't reboot, as a result of a bad power supply. I, also, have talked to everyone in India working for Gateway about this issue with no resolution except "sending my computer to Gateway to be fixed" for approx. $400 (give or take), and there's no telling how long it would take to even get fixed. Anyway, I've talked to Gateway, Gateway's supplier of power supplies (Skyline Engineering), and even the original manufacturer of the power supply (Delta Electronics, Inc.). I have successfully taken apart my Gateway media center and extracted the power supply, and once they begin manufacturing the newly revised power supply, I will purchase it and re-install it myself. This will easily save me atleast $300. If you find yourself in this same situation, please e-mail me so that I can provide you with the detailed description of how to do this, along with ample pictures so that you don't have to go through what I did. DO NOT SEND YOUR COMPUTER TO GATEWAY, AND GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY!!! It's not hard to get to the power supply, especially after you read my directions. Gateway is not owning up to their mistakes on this design, and I'm considering pursuing a class-action suit as a result. Their ethics are unacceptable, by charging such a horrendous amount for what probably takes them about 10 minutes to do, maybe less. Don't be a sucker! E-mail me and let me help you out! No catch. stepwebb50@hotmail.com
4-0 out of 5 stars Great PC; Little Regret
I bought this unit probably about six months ago. At first, I must admit I was nervous about the purchase. At $2,000, it wasn't cheap and being a poor worker drone, it was a big decision to go with Gateway--a company on the verge of becoming bankrupt with a bad reputation. Gateway bought E-machines and the stock dived and the numerous reviews of the company as a whole stuck at a variety of online stores. But, this was before I bought the beautiful, sleek 610XL.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for college
This computer is just amazing.I got it about a week ago and I love how I can watch TV and use the TiVo like features that it offers. It's so simple and convenient because there's 1 cord!!!! (Unless if you add the cable TV cord too). The specs on it are great for gaming, although if you are a hardcore gamer it might be a turnoff because upgrading it requires you to send it in, although with 128 megs of video and the other great specs you won't need another computer for a long time. The wide screen I'm adjusting to for gaming because it stretches out everything just a bit although it's not too noticeable. It's great for watching DVDs though. This computer basically can serve as everything: as radio, cd player, dvd player, and gaming system.I bought a Logitech Mx900 because the supplied mouse is ok but I need the extra features of the Logitech, although the standard keyboard is great. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars THE WORST COMPUTER I HAVE EVER OWNED.
I have had this computer for 7 weeks, and I've had nothing but problems.I bought it new from Best Buy and because it's past their 14 day return policy, the only thing they will do is take a look at it, IF I BUY their extended warranty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little System for the $$
Gateway award winning desktops are always a good choice for customers.I wasn't disapointed a bit with the feature set of this machine.256MB of memory and a 15 inch LCD were the primary feature sets that seperated this product from the other machines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Dell
Gateway is sometime slow at loading, gateway doesn't even have were you can be on the internet and somebody can talk on the phone at the same time, I had to buy a AOL disk. It doesn't matter what new Gatway computer they make it will never be as good as Dell. It still a good computer with a great color printer and great windows XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superior desktop machine at a reasonable price
It's true that you can get a decent desktop pc...these days. But that usually means (at best) 256 mb ram, 40 gb hard drive, a modest pentium 4 processor and a big ol' crt-monitor that takes up a lot of space on your desk. However, if you invest a little more you can end up with the Gateway 500x with 512 mb ram, a 120 gb hard drive (I axed the printer and upgraded the hard drive instead), P4 2.53 ghz processor and a sweet 17" flat panel monitor. I've had my 500x for a few months now and absoultely love it. If my buddy Renato were here he'd give you all the overly in-depth technical details, but he's not so here's the deal in laymen's terms: Unless you're a heavy (and I stress heavy) duty gamer or do tons of video editing, the 500x has more than enough muscle to meet your everyday computing needs (and then some), including web surfing and downloading all your favorite images, movie and sound clips. Both the cd and dvd drives have worked flawlessly for me. I work with multiple applications open at all times (including those that are known to be resource hogs) and have had zero reliablity problems with virtually no notice of speed degradation. Everything about this machine has been rock solid and it performs tasks at a blindingly fast speed. The sound system and video graphics are great. For the price and quality, you could do a heck of a lot worse than the Gateway 500x (and not that much better). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Numbers Don't Tell the Story
Most people who buy a pc do so for predictable uses: wordprocessing, games, internet, and off the shelf software.Even for those who deem themselves power users often find that one pc is pretty much like the other. The tiebreaker in the decision to buy is often a function of price and aesthetic appeal. The GATEWAY 700X desktop is a harmonious blend of the very best qualities that one could seek in a computer. I have a Master's in Computer Technology so I already knew its potential before I bought it, but when I had a chance to put it through it paces over an extended period of time, I was enormously impressed.First the obvious: it did whatever I asked it to in quick time.Whenever a potential buyer checks out computers, he most often looks at the CPU speed as a barometer of how fast the CPU works. This GATEWAY 700X boasts a 2.533 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, but it is not for that which invests it with lightning.Of equal importance to the CPU numbers is the less recognized internal bus speed.A modest bus number is 133.The GATEWAY 700X hums along at 266, a number sufficiently quick to make even jaded power users smile. When I go online, from the time I start to the time that I am ready to chat is measured in seconds. On my previous Compaq Presario, I had to wait nearly four full minutes for that.Computer salesman like to trump the size of a pc's hard disk storage. When I first bought a pc more than 10 years ago, it had 10 GB for storage, and I never came close to using it all. This GATEWAY has 80 GB, so it's nice to know that if you plan to input a database of several million items, you need not worry about exceeding your hard drive's capacity. The 18 inch LCD flat-panel monitor presents both text and visuals with crystal clarity--no eyestrain here! The speakers are far more sensitive to nuances in sound than you might be used to.The CD/DVD combo works quite well. The numbers bandied about for such devices (48x/40x/12x for the CD and 16x for the DVD) simply mean that what you see on the screen is about a clear as you can get. Not many users care about such arcane concepts as expansion slots.I'll be willing to bet that most do not even know what an expansion slot is, but for those readers of this review who do, rest assured that this pc can be bulked up to rival Colossus in THE FORBIN PROJECT. Further, for those with digital video on the mind, the GATEWAY 700X is a sterling, reliable performer. Finally, the GATEWAY 700X even looks good. Its ergonomic appeal is not unlike the feeling that you might have felt the first time you slipped behind the wheel of your first Corvette. What all the numbers in the salesman's brochures boil down to is this: you can probably find any number of computers that are comparable, but only a few can often first rate performance and reliability at a price that won't bust your wallet. The GATEWAY 700X is just such a computer. ... There's a brave new world in home entertainment that doesn't include the traditional stand-alone audio-video separates. Slowly but surely, VCRs, compact disc players, DVD players and all the other gadgets and wires that have made their way into living and entertainment rooms across America are being replaced. In their stead is a single unit -- a specialized computer that handles all of the above in addition to Internet surfing, CD burning, and much more. Gateway's new FMC-901 Family Media Center PC is one such device.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy
like other posts have said, the idea is cool, however, the product is defective.I have had mine for only a couple months and the screen continually goes black.Unfortunately, it started happening right after my warranty had expired.I sent my computer in twice and had to pay for the shipping and repairs and the problem still isn't resolved.I now have a thousand dollar paperweight sitting on my desk.Do not buy this computer! You will be severly dissapointed and frustrated to no end.If you're looking for a new computer I suggest you look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good concept poor quality
I have had this sytem for one year and the concept is great. Its a fast system, lots of features. But there is a problem that Gateway can't seem to fix. The monitor goes black, on and off repeatedly. Had it back for repairs but the same problem comes back within 3 months. Gateway said it was cable connection but it didn't help. They have been of no use in resolving the problem. My suggestion would be don't buy a system with to many integrated components, If one fails you end up with a paper weight like mine

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Buck
Outstanding computer for the price. Big time space saver. Great graphics. Fast. Dependable. Only negative is the remote keyboard (have to replace the battery every month). However, if i get too tired of that, i can easily just get another keyboard and plug it in. Not an issue really. ... Read more
