Poor ....
All,
STAY AWAY FROM VAIOS
My laptop has completely broken down TWICE in the 1.5 years since purchase ($2100 new !!!!) Motherboard and hard disk replaced 6 months ago, and now motherboard needs to be replaced again. STAY AWAY FROM THESE GARBAGE-TOPS. There is already a class-action lawsuit against Sony VAIO laptops filed in California, and will be one filed in New York soon.

Risky investment
I did not buy this computer but I bought two VAIO PCG-NV before. Both computers became very sick (memory slot problem, dvd-rom problem, lcd problem, etc) just after the warranty expired. There is a sony service center in my city but I was not allowed to drop my laptops there. I had to pay the shipping fee plus more than $250 for each computer to be repaired. A few months ago, one latop suffered from the "motherboard" disease. I decided that it is not worthwhile to save its life. The Worst purchase I even made.

Don't like this machine
My husband bought me the Sony Vaio FS742W for Christmas.I have been so disappointed.
Excellent deal
This product is excellent not only in terms of price but also in terms of performance. I particularly would like to appreciate its display quality. Its really awesome, crystal clear picture with more viewing angle. Also appreciable is the sleekness. Its really light as compared to other similar brands.
Very Pleased
I've had the machine about a month now and don't have a single complaint.Have had to call tech support a couple of times, for stuff *I* screwed up and they all spoke English and were very helpful. (Told me they no longer outsource and he said he was located in Ft Meyers FL.) This is my first notebook but I did a lot of research and felt this one gave me the most bang for the buck.The Keyboard is very comfortable, and the screen is awesome, (very bright).My only complaint is the sound...sounds like tin. My desktop is a Sony, which is why I was comfortable buying this laptop.Its six years old and still running strong...never had a problem with it.I would buy this or any other Sony again in a heartbeat. ... Great Media PC
I did a lot of research before I purchased this unit.I wanted a Media PC that would fit in my stereo rack that would actually look like my other components.My final two choices were this sony and the HP.I chose the Sony because it has HDMI (I like having the sound transfered over Digital) output, which none of the other Media PCs have out there and the processor was a dual core, which means it's more up to date than other units I looked at.

HP Sucks
HP has the WORST customer service of any company of any kind that I have ever dealt with. I have never called without having spent at least one hour on the phone with them before the various extensions in India, none of whom are helpful. And once the service is complete the computer is usually returned with more problems than they were origionally sent with. I would never buy another HP again.

Computer vs Tech Support
After skimming through the other reviews I have to aggree with most of them.The notebook was fast and more than adequate for school.It played DVDs well and accepts aftermarket software to its nice memory space without slowing down performance.
What happens after 6 months
I got this notebook last fall and was quite happy with it - for a reasonable price the configuration you get is much more better than the competitive laptops. I was thinking that this is a good deal that cannot be true - and I was right.

Great Wireless for Compaq Presario 2100US
My Compaq Presario 2100US came with a Lan-Express Wireless B.I would get horrible reception with it in my house unless I was right next to the router.I upgraded to a Linksys MIMO G router, but it didn't help much.(The MIMO G did help my work laptop with this Intel 2200BG card.)
Not as effective as external cards
I bought the Intel pro card to replace my external wireless card. The Internal Intel pro wireless card is ineffective since it keeps losing connectivity and signal strength. Hence I have inactivated it and have been using the external NETGEAR wireless card. ... Read more

Speed Up your VGN-FS630/W
I was very disappointed when I got my VAIO home and found out how "S-L-O-W" it was!! sometimes the seasons changed before it would shut down, I even turned it off and removed the batteries just to get it to shut down. After some investigation and just luck I deleted only the Norton Anti-Virus which came installed on the VAIO. I deleted anything that said Norton or that Norton was associated with. And "BAM" it now comes up fast and shuts down fast..."what a difference" it now works and acts like a PC of this system and software should.

Very Happy with my selection
this is my first laptop, i was a sound believer in desktops but as im entering the Air Force now i wanted mobility. my price range was about 1500bucks. wanted pretty much these exact specs except a faster processor and a standalone gfx card. but i settled with this laptop because of the looks first off, Sony has a great design team. and second was this beautiful screen. it's dual-lite. so its xtra-brite as they call it. great for dvd, the glare is more than others but with the brighness up all the way you can see just fine. thats another thing, you can adjust the brightness of the screen using two Fn keys. you also have to use the Fn key to adjust the volume but that isnt much of a problem since i have a Griffin Technologies PowerMate.
May be slow at first blush
One of the cons of this machine is that, though it has 512 megs of RAM, it dedicates 128 megs to the Intel Express Graphics interface, meaning you're effectively running with 384 megs of RAM.When you're running Windows XP, 512 is really the bare minimum for decent performance, so dropping down to 384 will put you into using virtual memory pretty quickly.Add to that a slower 4200 RPM hard drive where the virtual memory is stored, and you can bog down pretty quickly.
