5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice multi-media machine
I like this notebook.I had purchased a cheaper laptop earlier, but sent it back because of the fan noise. The cheaper laptops typically use Intel Celeron processors which do not include "Speedstep" technology.Intel's speedstep (or AMDs similar technique) is needed to reduce power consumption/dissipation (and hence heat) to keep the fan off.In Intel's line, it seems to only come with Mobile Pentium M (part of "Centrino") and with *Mobile* Pentium 4s.The Gateway M505X which has the more advanced Pentium M (1.4 GHz which is equivalent to perhaps a 2.4 GHz P4)) does not run the fan at all during most uses (probably would if one ran games, etc.), and the hard drive is virtually inaudible. In short, the machine is totally silent. In addition, the bottom only gets moderately warm (not hot). Also, the palm rests do not suffer from heat buildup like some competing models (hard disk location is better in 505X).5-0 out of 5 stars great notebook, for great price
had the notebook for about a month now, and love everything about it. No problems to report so far. 5-0 out of 5 stars Gateway M505X vs. Toshiba M35-S359
Similar to another notebook shopper, I debated between the comparable Gateway M505X and Toshiba M35-S359, (see the very complete review "Nice machine, nice price", December 2, 2003 for the Toshiba).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great computer for gaming!
i used to be against all gateway computers because they had gotten voted the worst computer awhile ago. i swore that i would never own one in my life. Now that i go to college they gave us the Gateway M675 for classes. it by far has been the best gaming computer i have ever owned. The M675 cuased me to recall my harsh sayings about gateway computers and restore a faith i thought id never have in a gateway. not only does it do games well but performs well with all the applications i run on it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars slim and sleek... the best
At first I thought it was too good to be true,I mean the very compact size, the moderate sized screen, and the overall look... and after a while I found out that it was too good to be true, at the time of trying to install an old printer in my computer, I found out that there is no parallel connection for a printer only one for some other thing, like a monitor or somehting.Even though I did not want to buy a new printer because I liked my old one a lot, I saw myself forced to buy one that had a usb connection. After that it was all good, except there is only 2 usb ports in the computer, and they are all taken up, so at the time of wanting to plug in my camera to the computer I have to disconnect either the printer or the floppy drive which is external (the computer does not include one)a usb hub should solve that though.Other than that the only other bad thing is the TINY speakers, they suck, but earphones or a regular set of pc speakers should solve that problem.Otherwise the keyboard is great, I feel it is very confortable, and it runs very smoothly, battery life does suck, but with a spare battery (one bought at some other place with more battery life)that problem was fixed. The scrolling wheel is pretty small so it is slow, but if the finger is rubbed against the right corner of the mouse pad then it moves much faster.Even though I have encountered problems with this computer they have been very tiny problems and they have all been fixed, otherwise the performance and overall speed of this notebook are very good. This tiny slim and sleek notebook has been the best thing that I have ever bought. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Gateway sales and support....STAY AWAY
Ok, right off the bat I want to say that the computer is alright and deserves better than one star. But...Gateway the company is THE WORST! I write this to warn you that they do not care about the customer and once they take your money they will not give you the time of day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great little machine, particularly with a few upgrades
This computer is spectacular, it looks great and also runs well.It is very small, but the keyboard is of usable size and has a good feel to it (my old gateway notebook definitely had a bit of a flimsy feel to it).Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The 2 month computer.
It's a nice computer, great specs, but when the power supply5-0 out of 5 stars Once skeptical, now a believer
I've always used HP notebooks and had what I considered "typical" glitches (periodic crashes, screen freezing, network connections being dropped). I started researching the M675 because Money Magazine reviewed it highly and TechEdge gave it Editor's Choice.I've never used a Gateway and always considered their products more consumer focused, not everyday workhorses.I've had this machine for 2 months and it has made me a believer.I've never since experienced the glitches from before and it truly has more power than my new desktop.Unlike the other reviewers, any questions I've had were quickly taken care of on their live chat or in a Gateway store.I give their service a 5-star as well as the product.4-0 out of 5 stars Good system, but Customer Service.....
I agree with the previous reviewer that Gateway customer service is lacking. In my case, I ordered the PC from the Gateway website with their "order by 12/19 to receive by 12/24" which was missing the fine print that the shipping guarantee didn't apply to desktops or notebooks. I contacted Gateway on 12/24 when the PC didn't arrive and was notified that the guarantee didn't apply and they were sorry. Later I tracked my shippment and it was direct shipped from Singapore and I received it on 1/2. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Gateway Has really bad customer service
Gateway Has really bad customer service[/size]: I spent $2800.00 on custom laptop for gaming. after 24 days it crapped out.... The Gateway policy is that YOU have to pay them $45.00 for them to send you a box to ship it back to them to fix it! after they had it back for over 10 days and still didn't know what is wrong with it or when I would get it back...I told them to just send me my money back and they got downright nasty with me. I talked with two people in customer service and they told me there was nobody else to talk with "NO returns after 15 days" "They will just fix it and send it back"

2-0 out of 5 stars Fool me twice...shame on me...
It *seemed* as robust as the other offerings, and it was such a great deal.Sure, the LCD on a previous Solo stopped displaying the left 15% of the screen, and sure, another had the backlight drop out - but things just happen, right?Gateway surely solved those types of issues, right? Right?
2-0 out of 5 stars a little bang for a lot of buck
I happen to be one of those consumers that reads every possible review and opinion of a product prior to making a purchase. With that said, most of my toys and business tools are terrific.
4-0 out of 5 stars Superb Quality Notebook
I have not had my notebook for very long, but it is already exceeding all my expectations. It is very lightweight and easily fits into almost any bag, which is excellent for anyone using this as a notebook for school. It also has a pretty nice sized screen for its size.I haven't had to resort to customer support, so I can't say what the quality of their service is.But everything else about this computer is wonderful. It has a huge hard drive and the centrino technology gives you built-in wireless capabilities, so you can tap into wireless without a card virtually anyone wireless networks are available.I'm telling you, you will have lots of fun with the advanced technologies this computer provides.Every computer will have its setbacks, and depending on how often you think you may need to get in touch with customer support, I think the benefits of this computer far outweigh that one setback!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gateway's Amazing notebook
I've had this notebook for 3 months now and it was amazing right from when I received it. Amazing features of this notebook includes Nice wide screen display and a pair of good internal speakers with subwoofer ideal for listening to music and watching movies. Recent games such as Final fantasy XI, Max Payne 2 and NFS underground runs very smoothly and the speedy pentium M processor handles most demanding applications well. The slot loading DVD drive is cool too, and most of all it has a AV control panel and it is light enough to be carried around. A quality product from Gateway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing
As a web and graphic designer, I constantly put my computers to the test. This one keeps up.I can have several high-intensity programs running at the same time without bogging down all my system resources.Furthermore, the battery life is amazing (mine is over 4 hours), it is completely silent, doesn't get hot, light for its size, and stylish to boot.I am in love.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing notebook

I bought one of these a few weeks ago to use for presentations to clients while on the road.During the first week, I loaded all of my data and tuned my settings on this computer.I noticed that this thing was slow to boot up, and was also slow at times to respond. The next week, one night before a rather large presentation, I started the computer to double check my Power Point show and tell.Less than 5 minutes after I began the computer DIED.I had it for only 10 days! The computer had never left my house!Thank God it happened so soon.Otherwise I would have been stuck with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gateway Hater
I purchased my new Gateway laptop and since I had not heard anything bad about the company, expected to have a satisfactory product. My main complaint is the exceptionally slow time it takes to install a program. The install goes along at a reasonable time frame copying the program to my hard drive from CD. But at the final install step which it states will take two minutes, instead goes on and on for hours. That was my spyware program. A few days later, I tried to install programs which came with the computer and again, two hours later when I tried to stop the install, a message came up that 'program xxx is still installing, do you want to quit?' I responded 'no' and the install contined for another two hours. I finally stopped it and have not bothered to install any other programs. My advice? Do not buy a Gateway.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Product - No Service
My experience with Gateway has been terrible. Here is my story.I decided to purchase a new laptop computer last month and with Lenovo buying IBM Thinkpads, I decided to try a new brand (I have owned IBM Thinkpads in the past).I ordered the $3,000 Gateway NX 860 XL before leaving for vacation in March and received it while on vacation.Upon returning home, I had a business trip scheduled and decided to open and use my new computer.Within 3 days of using the computer, my power supply failed and I was without my laptop the last 2 days out-of-town.At the same time, Gateway was proactively trying to schedule a technician visit to fix a faulty video card within this computer. At this time, I decided to return the machine because of its lack of dependability. Now it came time to deal with the customer service department. When buying the machine I was assigned a sales rep who promised to be available with any questions I might have in the future. Therefore, this was the first person I tried to contact with the problems on my new machine.Needless to say, I NEVER received an answer from him after numerous voice/emails.Next, I wrote a letter to the CEO and finally received a call back from Gateway executive offices.A gentleman in that department informed me that I was outside the 15 days return policy (by 2 days) and that instead of getting a refund, I would have to return the machine for service. The next day my machine incurred another defect - the screen failed.I can hear the machine start but I get no response from the screen (I even attempted to externally connect the laptop to another video screen with no luck). This was the final straw.I called both my sales representative (no response) and my new contact (from Gateway executive offices) leaving 4 messages in 2 days with no return call.It was not until I searched through the Gateway voicemail system that I got a real person who physically delivered the message to my contact for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first and only notebook. The best for the price
I got this as a back 2 school gift. From best buy. Even though this my first notebook i think this is the best computer for the money. Surround sounding built-in speakers. Really bright screen, super fast (after booting up). This computer and windows media player are like salt and pepper! Super fast with DSL, stores tons of music. Super clear sound. Not really the big gamer type of computer. But basic games not requiring tons memory and video. IM ON IT RIGHT NOW, while listing 2 my favorite song! Really would tell any1 to get this bad boy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't get much better for the price....
i was comteplating between the 6124 and the Compaq Presario V2000. this really seemed to be the better buy. i am extremely pleased, even if the startup is a little slow. compared to my home PC, this is lightning. the main difference between the Presario and this one is the screen. 15.4 Ultrabright compared to Compaq's 14'' standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Computer
I purchased this laptop for not more than $700.When comparison shopping around that level (my price range for a laptop), this was the best option.
