2-0 out of 5 stars hardware problem
I have been very happy with the performance of the G5 but for one very annoying feature. Very recently, a high-pitch sound appeared from the otherwise very quiet desktop unit. Browsing of the large internet Mac community pages revealed that my unit is not the only one with that problem. While the final diagnostic awaits confirmation, the majority of comments points to flaws in the design of the processor control and/or in the powersupply. To my great dismay, Apple customer service showed itself very uncorporative. For such an expensive equipment, low-end service is not acceptable. In conclusion, the computer performance warrants 4 stars, the recent problems led to a very annoying noise problem that lowers it to 2 stars, and the response from Apple is just disappointing (does not qualify for any star). One Apple a day keeps the doctor away. But only one without worms...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is Great
I got a new power mac G5 with 2.3 ghz daul core with 2 Gb ram and 250 gb hd and 256 vram. This is a major upgrade from my crappy dell. I bought this computr so I can flies from my ibook at school and put on the powermac then bring backthe file to my ibook. I also bought for games, photos, making music, lstening to music , making movies and much More. Once you are mac you never go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars unbelievable...
There is no question that you get what you pay for with computers. Macs do one thing - exactly what they are supposed to! It is great to have a system that runs flawlessly and FAST! I use this for boutique digital music production, and there is no system that I have used that compares to this. My suggestion is that if you run a business on a computer, and need speed to make your workflow happen, then this is a no brainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great G5 System - A great OS
I'm a PC/Mac Technician/Administrator by trade. So I have plenty or experience with Windows and Macs. I've used PCs since there were PCs and I always sayI'll use the best tool for the job, and time after time the best tool is a Mac. Whether you're an aspiring programmer, designer, artist, musician or simply just want to surf the web, view e-mail, IM friends or and get your job done easily, a Mac will suit your needs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome system with unbeatable processing power and operating system stability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Technology in an Amazing Machine
I converted to Apple computers back in law school, when I purchased my first Powerbook G4 (at the time, it was an amazing 400 mHz!) At first, I was very happy with Apple products: they were fast, easy to use, supported by amazing software developers, and oh so nice to look at and use.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best computer i've ever owned, hands down!
I use Mac's and PC's for work, and keep this as my computer for home. Both have there uses, but I like the OS for the Mac alot better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pisses on the competition from a great height
having owned some 7 computers in as many years,i have to say that this is clearly the best by a long shot. it's my first mac and experience with the (formerly intimidating), tiger operating system.(i was brainwashed into believing windows is the most stable and user friendly os,hence its popularity and ubiquity).

5-0 out of 5 stars I Highly Recommend This Computer!
This is the 4th Power Mac G5 I've owned, and must say, by far the best. It's extremely quit. No excessive fan revving like on previous models. Multi-tasking is improved with the new dual-core chips. You can't beat buying a Power Mac from Amazon. (...). I also highly suggest getting AppleCare with it. You will be fully covered -- parts, labor, and phone support -- for 3 years. If you have any questions on a Mac, visit MacOSG.com -- an online Apple User Group. Lots of friendly knowledgeable people there to answer any questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Power than ever, with Dual Cores
Ever since Apple introduced the Power Mac G5, in 2003, it has been the top dog, when it comes to Macs.Every Mac fan, geek, or professional wants one. With the October 2005 update to the Power Mac G5, Apple has made its professional desktop more powerful than ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dual G5 Two Thumbs Up
I have used ever single personal computer that has ever came up till today from Sinclairs, Amstrads, Commodores to todays PC's. Personal computers have never been so diverse and simple at the same time. The beauty of this machine not only comes from its processing power but also comes from the operating system. It's a unique system, a combination of software and hardware, extremely powerful, not to mention the every bit of cool design in it. I am a power user, to be more secific 3D animator and i am working on Maya. If i'd say that MAC has changed my life, that would pretty much sum it up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Even the World's Best Computer is Not Perfect...
Okay.We all know that Apple / Microsoft, Mac OS X / Windows, have had a war going on ever since they were invented.I have been reading reviews for a long time, and I have been a Mac and PC use for a long time. For those of you who read this reviews to gather infromation o whether or not to by a product, then I am here to help you with something.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe The Hype!
Please don't buy this computer. I did. I was a 'switcher' and spent a small fortune on it and the 30" monitor and lots of upgrades like RAM and HD. I have an Apple G4 powerbook that is wonderful though let me say!
5-0 out of 5 stars Super Quiet - Super Fast - Super System
This computer is so quiet, you have to check it to see if it is still running. I am an daily Photoshop user since 1987, and a loyal Mac user since 1984 (I've worked for Apple, IBM and Motorola). This system is so fast, it will keep up with everything you can throw at it in Photoshop CS2 - no delays - just instant filtering. The last Photoshop job I did (resizing and filtering 96 photos), I could really see the time saved using this computer - about 30% over my older G4 - which spells productivity. I ordered this system as a reconditioned unit for $2299 from the Apple Store with free shipping (53 lbs), and got a free upgrade from the 160G to 250G Hard Disk and Tiger DVD in the box - both were unexpected, plus a full warranty just like a new system. The system appears to be brand new, probably an open box or returned system. I added 2G more RAM for $200 for 2.5G total. Some reviewers have been critical about the lack of ports on the G5 systems (if that is all they can find at fault), but if you need more ports, you can easily add in a 3 USB 2.0/2 Firewire PCI card from IOGear for only $38, or a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card for about $20 - so stop whining about ports. The rear Firewire 800 port really screams with my LaCie Firewire Backup Drive, which is another reason to upgrade to the G5. Unlike the new 2.7GHz system (only 8% faster for $3000), the 2.5GHz system comes with one ADC and one DVI port on the 9600XT video card, plus a DVI to VGA adapter in the box. The new G5 systems don't support ADC without having to buy a $99 DVI-ADC adapter, which is messy to hook up, requiring a power supply. One more reason for buying the older 2.5GHz model if you own an older ADC LCD display (clear plastic model). Overall, I am very impressed with this 2.5GHz MP system, and can see this system lasting many years. XBench speed score is a fast 252.

5-0 out of 5 stars After almost a year with this machine...
I've been a Mac user for nearly 20 years. In May of 2004 I upgraded from a 450 MHz G4 (512 MB RAM) to a dual 2.0 GHz G5 (1GB RAM, two 250 GB hard drives). The machine I bought was defective-all nine fans were going full blast all the time. The operating system and software worked fine, but the tower was intolerably loud (it really sounds like a car the way the fans fire up). I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with Apple tech support. The fellow I spoke to was helpful and friendly until he misguided me about pressing a tiny button in the innards of the machine too many times (it's been a year, I don't remember what exactly this little button resets). He instantly became accusatory, telling me I didn't follow his direction and refused to discuss it. He basically told me my computer was hosed and that I may have voided the warranty; I should bring it in to be serviced and not turn it on again. The guy really turned into a jerk. I suppose he was just trying to cover his ass.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best computer hands down!

5-0 out of 5 stars I HAVE NO REGRETS!!!
PROS:
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a machine for professionals!
The G5 is meant to be "the professional's machine" for graphics and video. After you get past the "platform war reviews" on this list and look at the unitand what it can do, it does all it claims and more.Mac has and I hope always will dominate the digital video, audio and graphics markets.Anyone who cannot get this machine up and running out of the box in a few minutes, should probably invest in a toaster; because its obvious you were not meant to use a computer. The latest OS, Panther is sleek easy to use and pretty much runs the machine for you.Its also the only unix based OS on the market with a GUI.Which means that you can slip into terminal mode and run lines of code, while doing several other, heavy duty tasks in the background; that's background tasks that would bring any PC to its knees.By the way, Panther is the only system on the market that truly takes advantage of multi processors built into these boxes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Video Card a Minor Problem at Best
I've been a PC user since the good old days of the soldering iron, my last mac was an old powerbook running OS 6 or 7, either way - it was a long time ago.The main thing thats been keeping me from getting a Mac was price, and I must say - it's getting a lot better.I bought the dual 2.0Ghz configuration from the apple store along with the new 20" LCD (that still hasn't shipped ~_~) and it rocks. The biggest problem people have mentioned on the various reviews is the 64mb card - if it means that much to you, go to the Apple Store on their site and configure your own system with a 9800 or an x800 or a different 9600 if you'd like.I got a 9800 personally.I don't understand how anyone can claim a PC runs faster than this, perhaps with video games but for standard use (this coming from a person to whome standard refers to compiling java) its much better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superfast and beautifully executed machine
This machine is absolutely the most pleasant computer to use...and as an IT director in an architecture firm I've used many a system over the years! Apple's Mac OS X Panther is truly superb on so many levels: more secure than Windows, far more stable a system, and much easier to figure out even complicated tasks. Apple does a brilliant job making hard things easy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Apple G5 is an excellent computer
The Apple G5 is an excellent computer which doesn't have any of the problems on the Windows/PC platform, namely Microsoft Viruses, Trojans and Worms.5-0 out of 5 stars Mac g5 is the way of the future
a seemless system.I'm sure ther are some windows fans who honestly believe that a window machine and all the stability that is sacraficed is the best but once you truly get to know this machine you will never be able to go back to the countless crashes, poor functionality, joke of a plug n' play windows world.Buy some extra ram to eally start seeing the speed of this machine. It takes a lot more ram than most people are used to installing and once there is more in the machine the obvious superiorty of UNIX and Mac become apparent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars FAST & STABLE
Folks should be reading the technical specs--this is not the original machine that benchmarked out ahead of pentium machines. The buss speed and the front side cache are what was on the single processor-based machine. So the old Dual 1.8 machines are actually faster, since Apple bumped up the old 1.8's to 2.0 now.(I have one of each in my family.)I have not had crash problems, and both machines are very, very fast on very large photoshop files. These are both by far the most stable machines of any kind I have worked on, and the interface is a joy.But all you have to have is one old piece of equipment or really bad driver to mess your machine up.I'm curious about the people complaining that the G5 does not run Microsoft's windows emulation program and gave it avery low rating as a result. That 1) misses the point of getting an Apple and 2) blaims the Apple product for Microsoft deciding not to support Apple's product line.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent computer
First of all, this is an excellent computer-fast, nice to look at, excellent OS, and enjoyable to work with.Definitely worth the price (and if you configure a SIMILAR PC on the Wintel side, you'll obtain an excellent price/performance ratio)1-0 out of 5 stars G5 Freezes
This was my first mac. Panther is great, and I enjoy working on it.BUT, this machine crashes at least once a day. The screen freezes, and I can move the mouse, but that's it. You have to reboot.

4-0 out of 5 stars should come with a pack of cigarettes
Even if you don't smoke, you might want a "hit" after playing with this super-sonic speed demon. My boss ordered this computer as a "surprise" for me to replace my aging G4. If I had been let in on the surprise, I would have asked for a dual processor, but I'm not complaining.
1-0 out of 5 stars Softimage and other top companies drop mac os!

3-0 out of 5 stars Add $130 to your price...

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
I've had the new PowerMac Dual 2 Ghz. G-5 with the 20" Apple Display for about 5 weeks now.
5-0 out of 5 stars Zoom zoom zoom!
Okay so it may not be the fastest (2.5Ghz) but given the urgency I had then to get a new computer, I settled for the 2GHZ and not the 2.5 which I have to wait about 3 weeks more for it. After spending 4 years with a 500Mhz G4, upgrading to a dual 2.0GHZ is a MAJOR step forward for me. You start to notice the subtle differences in performance immediately. iTunes rip way faster, iMovie is simply a joy to use now versus the snail crawl I lived with previously... Photoshop filters zzpped through... and all of this amazing Herculean tasks are done with a barely audible whisper from the fans cooling the processors within.
5-0 out of 5 stars Slick
This is a great box with flexibility for upgrades through the years. My last Mac, a Powermac G4 was built in 1999 (I've since upgraded the video card and processor), and is still running well, but I wanted the extra speed for Photoshop.I'll pass the other one down to my kids. They've been salivating over it for some time now.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Freezer
I work for the Gov't (NASA).We purchased this computer in July of 2005.Since then, it has frozen roughly 25-30 times. The person who writes that OS X doesn't freeze, doesn't understand Operating systems.Any OS can freeze/crash due to flaky hardware. One obvious case is that of memory. If the memory is bad, how can the OS function?True, if there's a software problem, more times than not, the OS can gracefully shut down the ill behaving application. No such luck w/ bad hardware. In my case, the last freeze has cost me 4 days of work, and a new hard drive.Apple was nice enough to send out new memory chips (the suspected culprit), though neither of us are certain this is indeed the case. The freeze happens randomly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Machine
I have had this computer for about 2 years. I could not be happier with it. The design is just perfect needless to say. It's the first time I don't have any desire to get another computer after 1 year or so, and I don't plan on changing this one anytime soon (although I am planning on getting a MacBook Pro if a 12" version is released). I upgraded the memory to 1GB by myself and the process was extremely easy (not to mention how perfectly well the computer is put together on the inside, just as good as it is on the outside).
1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete Technology Even for a Mac Fan Like Me
I am a Mac fanatic and I did some research about this so called Apple "dual processors" and I found out that 90% of the software available for macintosh doesn't even recognize the second extra processor, so it runs as if it were a single processor 99% of the time. In other words, the computer works at half the advertised speed for practically everyone. I confirmed this by speaking directly with a representative for ALIAS, makers of Maya 3D. At this time, MAYA can only use one processor!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best designed computers in the world
This is the best industrial design of any personal computer in the world, including all previous Macs. It is form meets function executed perfectly-a true work of art. Just looking at it evokes a sense of bauhaus design ethic unsurpassed by not even a handful of other consumer products in the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a top notch computer - buy it even if the Intel change is coming!
I bought this computer almost two months ago to improve the quality of my Graphic Design and to cut the time to process video and DVD burning. I am as always pleasantly pleased with my Apple purchase!
