5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
I've had this model for about 2 months. For the price I paid ($599) it's a great machine. You'll pay double for a comparable Dell. It's small, lightweight, and runs smoothly. It does have a lot of included software, but some of the Toshiba stuff is pretty neat, like the touchpad utility (you can assign corners to different tasks).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great system with tons of junkware
I just received the M105-S0441 (my first Toshiba) and I am absolutely thrilled with the hardware - bright display, no stuck pixels, solid lid and case, and great keyboard. Its a keeper but I am disappointed about the junkware.Five different add-remove-programs entries for AOL, McAfee (useless for me) wouldn't un-install cleanly and lots of Toshiba not-needed-ware.With all of the reboots - it took and hour and a half to get all of the junk off of it - but it is still a great little system for the price.Highly recommended as long as you don't want to play 3D games.Update on 23 SEP:I've had this system for three weeks now and continue to be impressed.Just noticed this morning that the 512-mb of RAM is on the motherboard - and there is an open RAM slot.Competing companies tend to have two 256-mb RAM modules - forcing you to buy two 512-mb modules to upgrade the RAM to 1-gb.Nice touch on Toshiba's part.I had a spare SATA hard-drive so I used the Restore DVD with no problems at all (although it did restore the AOL/McAfee software).I know this probably sounds phony - and I don't work for Toshiba or Amazon - but this continues to be a fantastic system for the price.Oh - there is one small negative - there's a good amount of light leakage at the bottom of the LCD.It doesn't bother me but it is noticeable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good laptop for the price.
This is the second Toshiba Satellite laptop I have purchased. The first one is 7 years old and still runs perfectly, however, with a 266 Pentium and Win 98 it's slooooo!. The M105-S3041 I am using now has good value for the price. I looked at a lot of Dell, HP, Compaq and Offbrands before I decided to stay with the Toshiba brand. I have owned a few Toshiba products and have never had a problem with any of them and I don't expect any with this one either. It ran great right out of the box. I did spend a little time after setup deleting most of the supplied software and replacing theirs with mine. The bundled stuff just is not that great but most of you guys already know that anyway. The machine is fast and the 80 GB hard drive is adquite for most of my needs. The various card readers built in are a help too because I take a lot of photos with several different cameras using multiple cards. The reader even reads the XD cards quite well. I am very pleased with this PC and with Toshiba as well. There are faster laptops out there with a few more features but you will pay a lot more for them. The only thing that I have seen with this PC that I don't like is the amount of vibration that comes from the DVD +/- Everything burner. Some disks act as if they are out of balance and cause a lot of vibration in the drive which transferrs to the body of the laptop. I think the vibration comes from out of round disks because not all of them cause vibration. Still, I wish Toshiba had a better way of treating the vibration by containing it in the DVD bay. One other item I almost overlooked. Toshiba is one of just a few that includes a Recovery and Restore Disk with an operating system included. That is a big plus. Before you buy a PC of any kind, be sure you will have access to a restore feature that includes an operating system! If your Hard Drive bites the dust and you don't have access to a restore disk for your particular PC then it may become an expensive task to restore your operating system in the PC. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DONT BUY THIS
Bought this from Cicuit city for $650 in 2005. LOTS of problems. USB port doesn't work after three months I bought this. Can't return to circuit city and didn't get insurance. The screws are loose. Overheats VERY fast compared to other laptops. Once in a while when I turn it on, the screen is faded. The screen is lopsided. My little brother accidentaly put the mouse wires while the laptop was closed. So the right side of the computer doesn't even close! Never buy from toshiba again!
4-0 out of 5 stars Basic laptop, works fine
I've had this for 6 months now, and haven't had any problems with it.The wireless modem works great, the screen is bigger than avg, and it started up & run properly everytime.I've put some pretty bulky programs on it, and it hasn't slowed down at all.I upgraded on my own to MS Office because MS Work just didn't do it for me.I was shopping for a reliable, basic laptop, and so far that's what I've gotten.

1-0 out of 5 stars If it would just turn on!
My surprise was that the computer doesn't initialize at all. I requested a return form to send it back to amazon but I haven't received any information as to how to return the computer, all I get is a bad link in my email. The service shop here is really bad, so I'm stuck with a computer that doesn't work and I can't send it back. Just my luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little notebook that meets all my needs
I got it a bout 3 weeks back. The processor speed with 1GB memory give it lightening speed compare to my older machine (Thinkpak Z60). Small size, but big enought screen to do all things I need. After carrying around 5.1 lb for a year, and this 4.3 lb machine seems to cure many of my muscle pain. The color is good, the body looks and feel like a tank (but don't drop it just because I said so). Got USB on both sizes, which is great. The 2 things that a bit poor are (1) touch pad is a bit difficult to use, the buttoms are too flat and the touch pad seems to sit inside, not easy to click (I am used to that littke button mouse at the middle of the keyboard): bought a wireless mouse, and solve that problem. (2) build in speaker is poor quality, but hey that seems to be the standard for all other laptop except those that are 7lb+ size: got a head phone and solve this issue as well. So, overall, at almost half price against other compareable machine, this is the best buy I have had for a while.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent buy for your money
I was looking for a replacement to my old and heavy Dell Inspiron 8200. The most important features for a new one was portability (less than 5 pounds), price, and processor/memory. I liked a lot the Sony VAIO SZ230 but for a poor student like me it was too much $$$. After looking the Toshiba U205-s5022 at a local retailer let me tell you that it meets my buying criteria perfectly. Is is so lightweight that I don't even feel that I have it inside my backpack. It feels very strong and I love the keyboard feeling. The battery life is decent (~3.5 hrs without wireless on) if you're working normally (office, scientific software, listening to music, etc). The integrated speakers suck very bad! I've tried any winamp/mediaplayer/soundcard audio settings and do not improve anything. Plug the headhones/external speakers and the sound is wonderful. The small 12 in screen is sweet. With the resolution everything is readable and doesn't hurt your eyes by looking at it for long times. The only drawback is that under direct sunlight you get a very annoying glare from it. Inside buildings, under the shade, or at night no problems. It is very silent even under high processing loads so you don't disturb your library neighbors. The size is perfect! A little bit larger than a 9.5x11in paper sheet. It fits everywhere. DVD watching on the go using this laptop is a good experience. You get uninterrupted dvd playback on the widescreen display. There's plenty of hardrive space (120gb), enough memory(1gb), it comes with a dvd writer, a fingerprint reader as an alternative for passwords, 3 usb ports, SD card reader, integrated wireless, an intel centrino duo processor... in summary, you cannot ask more for this price(much better if you get the rebate offer). With toshiba, you have the option to upgrade your 1 year standard warranty to 2/3/4 years during your first year which is good in case something nasty happens to it :). In case you have your doubts go to compusa/circuit city and have a look at it before deciding. Its a good way to get some hands on experience before buying. I recommend this laptop.

5-0 out of 5 stars TOSHIBA best in its price range
I bought this laptop last week. Before buying it performed thorough comparative search with other similar laptops. Also gone through CNET's review which was not that great for model U205-S5022. Before buying it online I wanted to know the real look and feel, finally got one demo at Staples. Model U205-S5022 standard plus points:

What at first glance looks to be a very feature filled and powerful multimedia laptop, turns out to be just an average laptop.Toshiba is known for making not so great mainstream laptops, at least compared to its Qosimo series, which features a strong design, subwoofers on its speakers, and the latest gaming graphics.

Cole "pixelgryphon" says, especially the clock speed, in addition to what j.s.bach said about the `extra garbage' which I have also deleted; and I really like the fingerprint reader security.Overall I have to give this package a 3.3 out of 5 for the following reasons:Since this is my first Toshiba laptop (the last one was a Dell) I am very disappointed about the single sized teeny tiny right-hand shift key; I am continually hitting the up arrow instead after having used keyboards with the expected 2 1/4-sized right-hand shift key for the past 20+ years.Instead, Toshiba could have eliminated the duplicate "|"and "\" key (why did they do that, anyway?) below the Enter and above the UP arrow, moved the UP arrow to the right and used the extra space for a larger right-hand shift key.I'm also not happy with the END and HOME key location on the PgUp and PgDn keys only via access with the Fn key.If they are going to resize keys why not make the NumLock and "/" next to it (also a duplicate) key half-sized and put in full time, even if they are half-sized, END and HOME keys??How often do you use the NumLock and numeric keypad "/" key, anyway?I guess it depends on what you use the pc for, but for me END and HOME get used a lot. After looking on their website it appears that all Satellite 17" laptops with the separate numeric keypad have this same setup. The Qosimo series seems to be the only other Toshiba model with a 17" screen and a normal r-h Shift key but without a separate numeric keypad, which I would gladly give up for the standard r-h Shift key and other down-sized keys.My biggest problem was with the wireless setup/software which did not work out of the box.I struggled with that on and off for over 10 days before calling Tech Support.I kept getting error messages quoting some arcane references like (a-30), (a-27), etc. which I never did find out what they were for; and neither did their Tech Support. One big plus was that T-S answered almost instantly when I was ready for a 45 minute wait.I hope that was not just a coincidence that time!Bottom line was that after 40 minutes T-S told me to completely re-load the software!I was going to do just that but decided to try reloading just the wireless drivers (after removing them), since the wired port and everything else worked just fine.THAT DID IT, and now the wireless works and I didn't have to replace everything!Omitting the wireless problem I would give this product a 4.0 for the inaccurate description and teeny tiny r-h shift key.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what Amazon says it is
First of all it is a very nice laptop, but Amazon's picture of the unit is misleading. It does not include a remote control. Further the product discription lists the processor as 2.16 Ghz, 1.63 Ghz & 1.66 Ghz. Correct answer is 1.66 Ghz. The screen is sharp and bright. Last thing Amazon doesn't clearly state is that this computer has the mist gray finish on the top lid. The keyboard is closer to a full size desktop keyboard than most smaller laptops. It is packed with more software and features than I can keep straight and the documentation is minimal, it is difficult to determine which features your model has because there is no single listing for this computer and many features are referred to by the software and manuals that arn't on this computer. The most obvious one is the software for Bluetooth in the programs list, Toshiba Assist and in the manual but, there is no hardware.
4-0 out of 5 stars great.... but not out of the box
this is my third toshiba laptop but my first time diving into this solo core technology. i was a bit worried since i rather have others test the new things on the marked instead of me, but after quite a bit of tweaking and deleating garbage that this thing ships with, i'm finally getting the performance that i hoped for.
