If you're looking for a notebook that can handle entertainment and multimedia without breaking the bank, the Toshiba Satellite 1805-S253 is worth a look. It includes a DVD-ROM drive and 14.1-inch active-matrix display for watching movies or playing games, yet its price is at the lower end of the notebook spectrum. The system's processor is a Pentium III running at a reasonable 850 MHz; the unit also comes with 128 MB of memory, a 15 GB hard disk drive, and modem and networking support. I believe I bought it in 2001 at Staples.Since the, the problems with laptop include frequent shutdown due to overheat, bad hardrive, dead battery and LCD with dead pixels. This will be the last product I buy from Toshiba.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very great computer
fist of all, i'm not under 13. anyway, i think this notebook is very great. it doesn't shut down all the time. i read other reviews about this computer. it seems that the people who wrote the review was either pissed off about this computer, or they are jealous because other people have it and they don't. this notebook has satisfied all my computer needs. it has a dvd and cd player, 256 mb ram, runs on 1.2 GHz, and dvd and cd buttons to play, pause, skip backwards and skip forward buttons, and a stop button for your cd and dvd. it doesn't have a wireless card, so i bought one. it is worth the price. i mostly use this computer to watch movies. it isn't really for games. i tries playing a game, but it didn't work. but it is a very good computer. buy it if you have the money and want a notebook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba refuses to replace defective products
Bought the M205 in January 2004. Took it in for repair a couple weeks later because microphone (too close to speaker) was causing feedback through the speaker (ear-piercing shriek). Toshiba authorized service rep. was unable to repair it (after ordering and installing a back-ordered part from Toshiba, about 4 weeks of effort on my part). Now Toshiba says a "Toshiba Engineer" must have a crack at it. Getting this thing repaired could become a part-time job. Perhaps if you're fortunate enough to purchase an M205 that does not have this problem you'll be happy, but if you ever have a problem, be prepared for a real struggle.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Tablet Yet
first of all, don't pay attention to either of the negative write ups here... the first guy (with the short write up) doesn't even own this product; the second guy (the angry one) isn't even writing about the *correct* product. and if he is, he very curiously got his hands on an M200 about a year before it was released.5-0 out of 5 stars What else does all this?
This convertible Tablet PC has met every expectation that I had: long battery life, good sized keyboard, fast performance.I was worried that the screen might be too small because of the high native resolution (SXGA+), but I can read the screen just fine, and the text barely blurs when you change to XGA resolution. The tablet has accelerometers that allow you to issue commands via shaking the device, so far I haven't found this to be very useful.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD/CD-RW Combo and the TouchPad?
I would have bought this laptop the first time I saw it, except that it does not have a DVD/CD-RW combo.I just didn't want to pay extra for a separate CD-RW drive.5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Incredible package.
Only subnotebook to have full size key board (at least that is the way it feels to my very large fingers), yet to be a complete package with built in DVD rather than having to have a docking port and hook up an external drive any time one wants full usability. And, the years of experience shows in usability. This is my third Portege in the past ten years.Every one of them has had the convenience of being able to just shut it to put it into standby mode so that when it is again open it quickly fires up just where it was when it was shut.Others may have the capability to be programmed that way, but my portege's have always come out of the box with that feature.Support was great.I had a question on the fax modem and it took less than five minutes of touch tone menus and being put on hold to get to a technician who quickly answered my question.Reviews on places like CNET speak of the frustrations with Sony products that look great but fail in performance and support. The reviews are the reason I stuck with Toshiba and I'm glad I did. ... Marginally larger than the Portege 3500 Tablet PC it replaces, Toshiba's Portege M200 Tablet PC is also more adaptable, more battery efficient and substantially more powerful. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good solid laptop - tablet hybrid
I got my M200 several months ago and am very satisfied with it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A breakthrough technology, sign of things to come.
This thing is amazing. Since I got it a month ago I no longer touch either of my desktops and I nearly stopped using paper (I mean, to write on!). Superb 1400x1050 resolution exceeds anything you find useable on a desktop monitor. The tablet mode is great, too, with high resolution, intuitive interface and a comfortable pen. I write equations a lot, which is basically impossible with just a keyboard and a mouse, so the tablet mode is very handy. Handwriting recognition is very good, not that it matters, since most people type faster than they write, anyway. Speach recognition is also built in, but I never bothered to train it properly, and it's useless without training. Microphone and (monoaural)speaker are good enough for Skype and MSN Messenger, but not for watching DVD movies. Which is a moot point since there is no built-in optical drive of any kind. Had to buy an external USB 2.0 DVD-RW. No Firewire port, either. Can't have everything. Not yet anyway. Battery life is good, about 4 hours in the long-life mode, enough for most domestic flights, if you hate the inflight movies. The wow factor is fun, too, no question, especially when I take handwritten notes on it. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great
I love mine! it works great my only problem is that it has to have an external cd drive, otherwise it is amazing. As a student ai use it to take notes which i can later convert into text, to make nice, neat, and readable notes. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Satellite 1805-S203 does not represent the leading edge of Toshiba's notebook technology, but it does offer a nice set of basic components at a very attractive price. An 800-MHz Celeron processor is paired with 128 MB of RAM; storage includes a 15 GB hard disk drive and a DVD-ROM drive. The system's midrange-sized screen measures 13.3 inches diagonally and supports 1,024 x 768 resolution. A 56K modem is included as well. One area where the Satellite is less than ideal is portability: at 7 pounds, almost 2 inches thick, and with a rated 2-hour battery life, it's not easy to carry around for long. The Satellite comes with Microsoft Windows Me, plus Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition and Quicken Basic 2001. ... Read more

Marginally larger than the Portege 3500 Tablet PC it replaces, Toshiba's Portege M205-S810 Tablet PC is also more adaptable, more battery efficient and substantially more powerful. 3-0 out of 5 stars Worked well, then broke
I love the weight of the machine, though the small screen was tough to see and I had to use my reading glasses for it. Also, I had some software compatibilty issues with Windows XP for Tablet PC. Still, it was quick and portable and OneNote worked well at recognizing my handwriting, though it couldn't do it in real time and I had to convert it paragraph by paragraph after a meeting. Then, after about 13 months the hard-drive crashed. I had it replaced and 3 months later the motherboard croaked, so I gave up. I would think about a tablet PC again, but I'd want to be sure the software issues with the operating system were fixed, and that the hard-drive could take being tilted while running (what else is a tablet for if not to hold in your hand while you write?).

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I had hoped for
I'm an animator and I had previously used a Wacom tablet for drawing - but I found the distance between my screen and the Wacom a bit disorienting. I shopped around and researched awhile before I decided on the Toshiba. Animators gave this model consistently good reviews. This was my first tablet so I didn't know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the tablet was to configure and use for my specific needs. I was drawing on day one, and it was so nice to be able to draw right on the screen. One note about that - before my tablet PC was delivered I also ordered a screen protector (from StrongEngineering), which I put over the screen before I began drawing. These are not expensive (about 8 dollars) but will save you from needing to replace your screen due to nicks and damage from the constant pressure of your pen. My other laptop weighs in at a pretty heavy 12 pounds, granted it has two hard drives and an internal DVD burner, but Wow - this machine is so light! When I pick it up I almost have to remind myself that it's not a toy and to be careful with it. There is the trade off in weight for specs, but there have been no problems burning backup data from the Toshiba via my USB external DVD burner. The battery lasts an impressive length of time, which is nice since my goal was to streamline this system as wireless and cordless as possible. And I had no problems setting up this system to my previously established wireless network. My range does seem more limited then my other laptop, but this could honestly be a configuration problem. I had a lot of fun downloading free programs for the Tablet PC operating system at the Microsoft website. I have had absolutely zero problems and I am looking forward to the creations that this draw on system enables me.
1-0 out of 5 stars FLAWED PRODUCT DO NOT BUY. TOSHIBA WILL NOT SUPPORT
I simply picked it up by the corner and the screen shattered. Instead of acknowledging that one should be able to move a tablet without breaking it, Toshiba doesn't want to hear that the corners are obvously not well enough enforced with zero-cost spacers to prevent the stress. As 'physical damage', Best Buy and Toshiba refuse any consideration. Terrible design and non-existent support. I've owned Satellites, too. That's why I expected so much better.Apparently the constant mental overhead of fear of fragility is part of Toshiba's daring new mobile vision. ... Read more
