Battery Life
I recently purchased this Sony to replace my Dell and the weight of it works great since I am able to transport it well here in NYC. The 100 gig and processor are great for the price of mainstream laptops.Downfalls of this laptop include the default battery life that doesn't last as long as it should considering the technology we have.

Good enough for travel
Pro: made in Japan, no dead pixels, compact, eye candy, all drivers and user manuals available on support site, outer metal case, DVD write.
Almost perfect
I must say that this is the only laptop currently on the market that I find acceptable for my needs. It's small, light (compare it to a Macbook that has the same screen size but a pound heavier!), it has a decent video card (I would not mind better, it has 64 Mb dedicated, plus another 64 sharing, but most laptops this size don't have even that!), it has a wifi card that is extremely well supported - I installed Linux on this laptop - works beautifully, I can not only connect to wifi networks, I can also monitor traffic in promiscuous mode AT THE SAME TIME as being connected to the net, I can even make it an access point. The screen is excellent quality, harddisk, optical drive - no complains, got enough for all I need so far. Like the design of it, very stylish. Looks extremely good with the Linux desktop manager Enlightenment - non-intrusive but beautiful eye candy. HP Sucks
HP has the WORST customer service of any company of any kind that I have ever dealt with. I have never called without having spent at least one hour on the phone with them before the various extensions in India, none of whom are helpful. And once the service is complete the computer is usually returned with more problems than they were origionally sent with. I would never buy another HP again.

Great Laptop
I've had my SONY VAIO for a week and I love it.The screen is bright enough so that I can use it outdoors in the daytime, the battery is long lived, and it weighs about 4 pounds.These were the primary characteristics I was looking for and it was difficult to find all of them in the same unit.So far, I have used the VAIO primarily for word processing, number crunching, and web surfing.I have not used the DVD feature yet. I did hire a tech to set up the wireless connection to my desktop.Those of you who are more computer literate than I may not have to do that.The VAIO comes with an installed Wireless Install Wizard to help with that task.
careful with electric shock
This is a nice machine except for the fact that when it is plugged it gives an electric shock to the user. Please search your favorite engine with "sony vaio sz electrick shock" and you will see that this is a common event. In the next month or so I will try to see if this machine can be returned to Sony and/or file a complaint with my state's attorney general. This is completely unnaceptable.

Great Little Laptop
I have two of these laptops, and love them both.
The Speakers Ultimately Blew
It took a few months, but the tiny speakers on mine blew out.Very disconcerting, especially if you use the laptop for music or viewing movies.
Problem
Mine had a problem with jerky video within the first several weeks and it never was fully resolved.An okay machine for doing work, but sucks for playing.Worst of all it ships with a pretty anemic battery. ... Read more

A very solid laptop, works great with linux, pretty quiet.
The keyboard is very consistant and feels great but has some strangly placed keys. The Tilde and windows keys are good examples.
Good Laptop with a Software Flaw !!
I bought this laptop recently and it was very easy to get it started. The Screen is very good. But the problems started when my Internet Explorer Stopped responding ( Hanged) and it started happing randomly and frequently. So i switched my browser to Firefoxbut with the same result. The Firefox browser also hanged randomly and that would cause the Task Manager to also stop resoponding for a minute , before i could kill the firefox process.

Don't like this machine
My husband bought me the Sony Vaio FS742W for Christmas.I have been so disappointed.
Excellent deal
This product is excellent not only in terms of price but also in terms of performance. I particularly would like to appreciate its display quality. Its really awesome, crystal clear picture with more viewing angle. Also appreciable is the sleekness. Its really light as compared to other similar brands.

I've had the machine about a month now and don't have a single complaint.Have had to call tech support a couple of times, for stuff *I* screwed up and they all spoke English and were very helpful. (Told me they no longer outsource and he said he was located in Ft Meyers FL.) This is my first notebook but I did a lot of research and felt this one gave me the most bang for the buck.The Keyboard is very comfortable, and the screen is awesome, (very bright).My only complaint is the sound...sounds like tin. My desktop is a Sony, which is why I was comfortable buying this laptop.Its six years old and still running strong...never had a problem with it.I would buy this or any other Sony again in a heartbeat. ... Too Fragile
This unit is too fragile for use as a traveling laptop.My screen cracked when I moved the unit on my desk (a $699 repair).The attitude at Sony was "you shouldn't move it by the screen"....The Sony repair service experience is a horror.I'm going back to my older & sturdier Fujitsu P series. ... Apples to apples....
Many people have written some great reviews about the PROS/CONS of this notebook, and I have ot say that they are exactly right.I will spare you having to read the same information again, but I will say that sometimes the keys can be a bit picky, especially the space bar, which fails to register a stroke from time to time.However, comming from a law student who takes all his notes via typing on his laptop, this is a very managable issue.

I hate SONY notebook
I hate SONY Notebooks. I bought this SONY Notebook and had problem with scroll pad as well as problem with FAN. FAN makes lot of noise, as if we are running a turbine.

nice in the outside, but......
Have it less than a year, I really dissapointed with the performance. The wireless always up and down ( very unstable ). Compared with my 3 years old compaq presario....a way different. My compaq always reliable, excellent signal wireless strength at all the time....don't waste your money, buy Sony electronics, but not the notebook, they likely not expert on it....
